Meet John Vaughn

We were lucky to catch up with John Vaughn recently and have shared our conversation below.

John, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?

As a music artist, my optimism about my music comes from a firm belief that I have and can create songs that are as good or better than mainstream music. Regardless of the level of success my songs achieve, I know that I did my very best to create and share something I love. Music is subjective and succeeding in that area requires a lot more than just great music. I stay optimistic by measuring my success against my own past performance and not comparing it to other artists that I look up to.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I was born in France, where from a young age I was exposed to all sorts of music. My sisters and mother all played musical instruments at home, every Sunday at church we would sing christian music and I always had the urge to create my own songs.
I quickly discovered that I had a creative side when it comes to music and my greatest strength was finding good melodies. I taught myself piano and guitar and would spend hours improvising and creating. This love for creating melodies is what has always driven me and over the years I perfected my craft and discovered various styles I enjoyed. Over 15 years of songwriting and learning to work with others who see my musical vision have brought me to where I am today. Although my music streaming metrics are not yet where I’d like them to be today, I now own a strong music catalogue that I’m proud of and that is waiting to be discovered.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I would say my greatest qualities when it comes to music, are firstly, my ability to create very catchy melodies which is the foundation of the music I make. Secondly my perfectionism helps me work on a song until every detail sounds the way I want. And finally my love of music is what gives me the motivation to keep creating new music.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I am always looking for people to collaborate with, whether it be beat-makers, singers or fellow songwriters, some of the best music is the result of combining different musical visions. My ideal collaborator would be a songwriter with a music style close to mine and an ambition to create and share great music.
