Meet Dr Joe Mather

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr Joe Mather a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Dr Joe , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

1) Grew up in the shadow of my Dad and Grandfather who were both doctors in my small down

2) University of Notre Dame gave a scholarship to live and work in Calcutta India with Mother Teresa’s Catholic order Daughters of Charity, and I was exposed to true suffering.

Since then I always just wanted to help those that were suffering the most.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

My name is Dr. Joe Mather. I’m a board certified medical doctor who has spent the last decade incorporating functional medicine tools into my treatment plans, learning which functional medicine strategies work, and which are just snake oil.

I was once where you are – frustrated at the lack of tools that conventional medicine offered to help chronically ill patients, but not knowing where to turn. I was stumped by cases of chronic fatigue, depression, GI disorders, metabolic issues and more. However, after learning about functional medicine and incorporating these tools into my clinical practice, things started to change.

I began to see smiling and happy patients who came back grateful for my help, and who referred their whole family to my care. I no longer had to worry about recruiting patients or marketing, as word of mouth helped build my small office. These tools helped me make a full salary seeing patients just 2.5 days a week.

As I began mentoring other practitioners around the world, I was shocked at the state of functional medicine education. I saw how the main educational bodies were being funded by lab and supplement companies and teaching outrageous and harmful treatment plans. I saw well meaning doctors get stuck in models that prevented them from helping patients, and in some cases directly hurt their patients.

I know that there is a different and simpler way to help your patients and build a happy, successful and thriving functional medicine practice. I’ve spent the last decade learning how it’s done and want to share that with you. – Dr Joe

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1) Curiosity – always wanting to know WHY my patient was sick

2) Contrarianism – I’ve never liked rules … it’s just so much more fun to do something your own way and not accept that things have to be as you are told they are

3) Determination – once I’ve made up my mind to do something become borderline obsessed with following through

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
