We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Susann Offenmüller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Susann, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I think my resilience comes from having had to rebuild myself more than once — personally, artistically, and professionally. I’ve lost everything a few times, including my sense of identity, and each time I had to start again from zero. That process of constant rebirth taught me that strength doesn’t mean never falling — it means finding a way to rise again, but with more awareness, more heart, and more truth each time.
For me, music and creation have always been the bridge back to myself. No matter what happens, art gives meaning to everything. My resilience really comes from both pain and purpose — from breaking through difficult times because there’s always a vision that pulls me forward.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
For the past years, I’ve been working professionally as a film composer — scoring projects that explore emotion, human psychology, and cinematic storytelling. This year, I decided to take a big leap and launch my own artist project, susann. It’s something I’ve dreamed about for a long time — a project where I can pour all of my heart, my story, and my creative vision into something that’s fully mine.
My debut album is called Uncontrolled & Vulnerable, and it explores the dualities within us — strength and softness, love and rage, light and darkness. Coming from a classical background, I moved through the world of film music and now into this artist identity, which feels like a huge evolution for me — both creatively and personally.
It’s been an incredible and challenging journey, especially as I’ve recently moved from Germany to Los Angeles. You have to learn everything anew — how the industry works here, how to build connections, how to stay true to yourself in a completely new world. But it’s also deeply exciting, because I feel like I’m building the life I’ve always wanted — creating art that’s honest, cinematic, and emotionally alive.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I’d say the three most impactful qualities on my journey have been courage, emotional depth, and creative discipline.
Courage, because every meaningful step in my life required me to start again — to leave what was safe or familiar and follow something that felt true. Whether it was leaving Europe to move to Los Angeles, transitioning from classical music to film scoring, or launching my own artist project, courage was always the first step. My advice would be: don’t wait until you feel ready. Start when it matters. Readiness comes through movement, not before it.
Emotional depth, because art is not just about sound or image — it’s about truth. Learning to feel deeply, to face pain instead of numbing it, is what allows you to create something that touches others. I believe emotional intelligence is one of the most underrated skills for any artist or leader.
And finally, creative discipline — the ability to keep showing up even when it’s not glamorous, when there’s doubt, or when no one’s watching. Consistency creates momentum, and momentum creates magic. So build routines that protect your creativity, not just your productivity.
If I had to give one piece of advice to anyone early on: don’t chase perfection — chase authenticity. The rest follows.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Absolutely. I’m always looking to collaborate with people who are driven by depth, authenticity, and emotion — whether they’re filmmakers, artists, producers, or other creatives who want to make something meaningful. I love working with people who care about storytelling, who want to create art that actually moves people, not just fills space.
Right now, I’m especially open to collaborations in film, visual art, and performance, as well as producers, directors, and visual creators who resonate with the cinematic and emotional world of susann. I’m also starting to build my creative circle here in Los Angeles, so connecting with like-minded people — especially those who combine artistry with vision — is something I value deeply.
