We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jason Hickey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jason, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I believe confidence and self-esteem are a by product of a daily non-negotiable routine. I have been an athlete since I was 3 or 4 years old and I learned at a pretty young age that I would have to out work of kids to get where I wanted to go athletically. The more I practiced and ran drills the more confident I felt in game when I saw the same pattern or play. I was fortunate this was instilled in me so young and I carry this same approach in my everyday life still.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
An important part of me is that I am sober now for 13 years. I ended up having a career ending injury which left me with an identity crisis and deep depression. As a result of this I turned to alcohol to numb my pain for a couple years and I ended up in a hopeless state. By the grace of God, I was lucky to find sobriety and was able to rebuild my life with a lot of new tools. It’s been the backbone of any success I have had since then.
I am a professional poker player and coach. I always loved competing in sports and games and when baseball left my life I found poker and become obsessed with all the strategy and mind skills needed to be great. I eventually fell into coaching other players, both in strategy and building a healthy framework to live life in a profession which needs so much discipline and mental strength. I love the balance I have now between both playing and coaching.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One would be learning from your mistakes. I fell into this cycle for a long time of recreating similar problems and with some guidance around this I’ve been able to not fall into that pattern as often.
Two would be find a mentor. Having someone with a ton of experience in something you are pursuing is huge. I have learned many of my skills and life lessons from my mentors along the way.
Three would be honesty. A lot of times the lines can be blurred in this area, especially in business. I take pride in being an open book and honest in all areas of my life. This allows for transparency in all my relationships and most importantly, peace.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
In building a business, it’s so important to be able to ask for help and also collaborate with others in your, or similar fields. My business is two part with poker strategy and health/wellness. I love working with people and guiding them to this place where they can start improving in all facets of their lives, not just poker. I am always open to collaborate with businesses around self-improvement.
