Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Katie. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Katie, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
My great grandmother was the most positive, content person I’ve ever known. She had very little money or prestige, but she was delighted by the simplest things, like a freshly baked cake or a fresh bar of soap. She lived a long, healthy, happy life and I try to model my positive thinking after how she carried herself in the world. It’s not always easy, but I find that if I am actively grateful for the small details throughout my day, I’m kinder to the people around me and challenges feel more manageable.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a mental health writer and voice over artist living in Brooklyn, New York. I’ve published personal essays for publications including Elle, Huffington Post, Business Insider on topics like shame, divorce, parenting, and mindfulness. It’s important to me to write from an authentic place, sharing details on topics that may feel taboo or embarrassing, in order to have a genuine connection with readers. I also record guided meditations in collaboration with my husband, who is a music producer.
I’m currently working on a fiction story, lightly based on my experience growing up in a religious southern town, that I’m super excited to share!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Resilience, curiosity, and honesty have been the most helpful qualities in all of my creative and professional pursuits. I’ve had to learn to stick with a project even when my fear is screaming at me to stop, to ask intentional questions from people who are doing it better than me, and to write like I have a polygraph hooked up to my body. I’d say to anyone looking to grow to just be kind to yourself, ask for help when you need it, and know that your grittiest truth is always be worth sharing.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
I absolutely love Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott for breaking through imposter syndrome. We can often glorify writing as this romantic act of pure talent and inspiration and Lamott demystifies the entire process. I say “take it bird by bird” to myself anytime I get overwhelmed or stuck.
The book You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay completely changed the way I think and speak. I recommend the audio book because her voice is so soothing and the way she reads affirmations is quite powerful. Thanks to Hay, I’m now kinder to myself and approach life with a more positive outlook.
