Meet Julie

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Julie. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Julie below.

Hi Julie, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

Interestingly enough whenever anyone asks me what some of my strengths are I immediately say resilience. I suppose you could say that I acquired it through being tossed under the water too many times by life and I had to learn to sink or swim. After being knocked down a few times you learn how to get back up quicker and quicker each time. Resilience to me is the ability to not only stand back up but not stay down for too long.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

For over a decade I have identified as a veteran, having served a short 2.5 years in the Navy as an Aviation Electrician from 2010-2013 I quickly learned not only am I a veteran but a disabled one. I pushed myself to heal, through art and writing. After painting a mural in my hometown and being featured as an artist for my own gallery showing I tucked art into my back pocket and had my first born son. The last five years have been focused on my identity as a mother more than artist or author. Recently I have been working on a memoir about Love with the goal of January 30th (my 34th birthday) as a release date. I am collecting canvas’ in my basement for a future art show in my hometown & in the meantime keep myself busy with a few things including Brazilian JiuJitsu, working out and learning the Guitar / playing the piano. I also help moderate a community on X called Gratitude Unleashed, co-hosting one hour spaces every Monday from 12-1pm EST.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The ability to adapt and overcome any obstacle thrown in my direction, taking things step by step and focusing on what I do have control of are three specific skills that were most impactful in my journey. Have compassion for yourself when you feel like you failed, remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day so allow yourself time to grow into your potential also.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?

Learning how to love myself for who I am on the inside & out.
