Meet MATTHEW JAVITCH

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful MATTHEW JAVITCH. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with MATTHEW below.

MATTHEW, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

My resilience comes from taking ownership — not shying away when things go sideways, but asking what can I learn from this and how can I adapt? It’s a mindset that turns challenges into data points.

It also comes from ambition grounded in self-belief. I’ve never expected the path to be easy, but I’ve always expected it to be worth it. Knowing that every setback sharpens judgment makes it easier to keep pushing forward.

Finally, it comes from a long term outlook that I learned at a young age. All gains and loses are only on paper until you cash in your chips (or stock certificates).

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m the Managing Partner of a boutique commercial real estate brokerage that combines the white glove feel of a private bank with the tech-focused approach of a startup. The most exciting part of our company is the team we have. We’re a boutique firm and culture fit is everything. In addition to my team, I love putting deals together. I think of myself as a trusted advisor helping my clients to identify and acquire the right assets for their portfolio, Then I together put the right team of professionals to help them manage and operate those assets over their desired hold period.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1. My deep knowledge of real estate finance, risk assessment, and underwriting provides a solid intellectual safety net.
2. Having people you can rely on in business is extremely important for success. Have people you can rely on for emotional and practical help is equally as important. It helps you bounce back after a tough day.

Advice: There are highs and lows in every career in any industry. Stay the course, take the long view, don’t feel sorry for yourself, and keep pushing. You’ll do well.

We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?

It’s often a good idea to pick up a new skill that complements or strengthens your core skill set. That said, the focus is remains on improving your core skills and becoming the absolute best you can in that area(s). It’s better to be expert in one area and surround yourself with others who provide additional skill sets needed to complete the job than attempt to do all tasks needed to complete the job.

For example, Tom Brady – the greatest NFL quarterback of all time – didn’t practicing catching the ball or tackling other players. That would have made him a more well rounded football player. Instead, he was great at being a quarterback because he spent time practicing throwing the ball, handing the ball off, and mastering his footwork.

Here’s another example: If you’re constructing a building, you need to hire an electrician. It doesn’t hurt for the electrician to know the difference between a 1/2 inch pipe and a 1/4 inch pipe, but you want a plumber to install the plumbing. You don’t want one tradesperson doing all the trades, you want an expert.
