We were lucky to catch up with Drew Samuelsen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Drew , appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep reading great books, both old and new. If someone recommends a book to me, I check it out. The same goes for watching movies or shows to streams. I think it all helps to keep the creative process flowing. In the end, though, a writer has to sit down and get back to writing. There’s no other way to do it.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I wrote the award winning Restart series, which is a Young Adult dystopian sci-fi thriller set in the near future. Restart, book 1 and Dawn of Shadows, book 2, are published by Cosby Media Productions, a black-owned indie press. Book 3 is set to be released in time for next summer 2026, and I’m also pitching the screenplay!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Initiative is so important for a writer. Without it, the story doesn’t ever get started. It sounds simple, but I think it’s true. So many people have great stories to tell, but I suspect many lack initiative. Equally critical is perseverance, which I understand to be the ability to keep going through the rough times when it seems easiest to quit. This, of course, is the precise time when you must not quit! Lastly, I believe preparation is consistently important because it makes the entire process so much easier and more effective because you feel as though you’re ready, which breeds confidence. Overall, I would advise people who are early in their journey to set aside quiet, uninterrupted time to be creative and allow their mind to work on its own.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents never underestimated what I could do. If I talked about trying something new, they listened and offered suggestions and allowed me the space to figure it out.
