We recently connected with Brandon Holley and have shared our conversation below.
Brandon, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
Switching things up is the key to keeping my creativity alive. I’ve never met an artist who can sit in the same studio/ room and make the same music year after year. Luckily with technology today you don’t have to be in a studio to create anymore. Sitting at the beach, park, or even just in a different room in your house with some headphones can spark creativity. Also working on new music and creating outside of the box is my favorite. I feel like I have made dubstep/ trap music for years and over the past couple months I have started going in a different direction with my sound. Sometimes you just need to get out of your comfort level to spark something fresh.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a DJ/ Music Producer currently living in Huntington Beach, CA. I toured with many artists as a DJ through out my 20’s and there just came a time where I wanted to focus on creating music and establishing my sound. Touring 250+ days out of the year was the best experience but I always found it tough to really finish songs on the road. I am super excited about all the new music I have been working on and have new releases dropping every month.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The first main quality would be to just listen. If you are lucky enough to have a mentor or surrounded by talented artists, listen to advice and see how they navigated adversity to get to where they are. Trust me, you think you may know everything but that’s not always the case. Second, always keep an open mind. Collaborating with different artists that are in a different genre can be scary at first but it will only open your mind to new ideas. Finally, keep pushing and never stop. As humans we deal with every day life that can either boost us up or bring us down. Find your why and your reason to why you do what you do. That should drive you to continue to push through anything life throws at you.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
Creating good content to promote your music can be a struggle especially with society today. With around 120,000 songs being uploaded to Spotify everyday, it’s tough to stand out. I am a musician at heart and always want to work solely on creating new music. I have had to pivot and spend more time on promoting each song more than I used to. I still struggle with this daily and really trying to focus more on this with each new release.
