We recently connected with Solus and have shared our conversation below.
Solus, so great to have you with us today. There are so many topics we want to ask you about, but perhaps the one we can start with is burnout. How have you overcome or avoided burnout?
I think the easiest way for me to avoid burnout is to keep reminding myself of what it is I’m working towards. I know that it can be easy, especially as creatives, to slip into an unproductive headspace, regardless of what causes it. And I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that I don’t enjoy standing still when I know that I could be working towards getting closer to achieving my goals. That’s the biggest reminder for me to keep going: the knowledge that I will only achieve what I desire by working at it whenever I can.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’ve always been fond of writing, but that’s matured into rapping due to my love of music. Solus is someone who has a passion for creating music, writing lyrics, playing with flows, and everything that comes with being a rapper. When I started with simply writing lyrics, I didn’t think that it’d grow into something bigger. Honestly, I began writing in harmless fun. But I’ve found myself enveloped in all things music, and I’m proud of my work. I released my first single in August, and I plan to follow up with another by the end of October.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The biggest three points in my journey have been hard work, perseverance, and passion. To be successful in any field, you, of course, have to work extremely hard. You have to want to be great in order to be great, and only then can you truly work your way to the top. Hard work is the foundation of any success story, but even that alone isn’t enough. Throughout my journey as an artist, I’ve faced a number of setbacks. Some internal, some external, but a setback is a setback all the same. When faced with something that can throw you off, it’s imperative that you stand your ground, keep your eyes on the prize, and keep moving forward. No matter what. This last point may not apply to everyone, but I personally wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am today if I didn’t love what I do. Every day I write a new verse, and every day I strive for greatness. This is only because I want to be able to do this for a living, and I’m willing to put forth everything I have in order to make that happen. And I implore anybody else in a similar position to do the same.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
I would say either stage presence or my skill set as a rapper. I think I performed for the 1st time about 7 months ago, and I was very tense during my performance. From that point on, I’ve performed at least once a month, with the intention to make each one better than the last. At this point, I can say with certainty that I’m confident enough to step on any stage, no matter the size, and know that I’ll kill it each time.
