Meet Dylan Delroy Davis

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dylan Delroy Davis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dylan Delroy below.

Hi Dylan Delroy, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I found my purpose in life based on a dare. I had always been a movie ingest-er and art fiend, but I had never really let that surface as who I was – not yet. The crowd I was hanging out with dared me to audition for the school play in the spring. What started out as a good laugh, ended with me getting cast and uncovering a sensitivity and a part of myself I didn’t even really know was there. I’ve been marching on with that ever since.

The whole thing taught me the importance of saying “yes” and diving headfirst when in doubt. I’ve definitely said “yes” more than “no” in life since then and I can’t advocate enough for giving that a shot. There’s ups and downs like in anything else, but hey, that’s life – and sometimes it can be beautiful but only if you let it.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I just love to try new things.

I used to be obsessed with obtaining the title of “Renaissance Person” – someone who dips a toe in any facet they can get their hands on. I always saw this as something to be obtained – which helped me stay accountable in my lifelong mission to “say yes!” I’ve realized later, though, that the selfish idea of “doing it for the branding” was awful – DON’T do it for the branding. DO do it for the adventure. Now, I’m someone who learns. If I can learn something about myself, my art, my world; or someone else, their art, their culture, their world, and their voice – THAT is what I want to be doing.

I’m Dylan. I’m a writer, filmmaker, and occasional actor (my first love). I’m also an improvisor, a bartender, and an amateur musician. My first short film, “What Went Wrong with the Domestic Dog?” is now streaming anywhere you watch your movies and will soon be joined by the second, “She’s Not Like Other Girls” on Halloween Night this year (2025). My short story, “Move Thirty-Seven” was just published in Little Demon’s anthology “Universe in Flux” and you can snag a copy on Amazon! And all of my plays are available on my NewPlayExchange for free!

Otherwise, I’m always writing, always challenging myself, and always learning. If you want to try something new, be on the lookout.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Spontaneity, listening, and hearing.

For the personal aspect of my journey, I always try to remain spontaneous. That is key, as I’ve expressed. It’s the “saying yes” of it all.

Personal approach aside, I was once taught that, when you’re observing someone else’s story or culture it’s always important to listen – listen to their unique story and their experience. To go one step further, you must hear them. This means never mindlessly watching them speak and waiting for your chance to talk. Don’t take their time to speak and use it to come up with you will say next. Be present.

This is true in art. Don’t try to understand art. Listen to it. Hear it. Be present with it and let it affect you. This is how we learn.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I’m always looking for collaborators. I want to work with people that have been in their field for years, people just starting out, or people who have never tipped a toe into it at all – whether that be writing, acting, improvising, or anything else I jump into.

I want collaborators that I can learn from just as much as I hope they can walk away learning from me.

We’re all in this together.
