We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emma Whitehead. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emma below.
Emma, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
Honestly, my optimism comes from seeing how far I’ve come with AlySwim and how much I’ve learned along the way. When I first started, I had no idea what I was doing — I was just teaching myself how to sew swimwear and decided to post a few pieces on Instagram to see if anyone would be interested. The positive feedback I got gave me the confidence to take it more seriously. Once orders started coming in and people loved what I made, I knew it was time to create a website and start doing local markets.
When I did my first few markets, they went so well that I assumed every one after that would be the same. But I quickly learned that business doesn’t always work that way — some days are great, and some days can be slow. Instead of getting discouraged, I started looking at the slower markets as opportunities to connect. Even if I didn’t sell a ton, I was still getting my name out there, handing out cards, and meeting people who might become future customers.
These experiences have taught me to stay grounded and grateful. Every single interaction matters — the person who doesn’t buy something today might tell a friend about me tomorrow. Over the past three years, attending markets has not only grown my business but also my mindset. I’ve learned that optimism isn’t about pretending everything’s perfect; it’s about choosing to keep showing up, learning, and staying excited for what’s next.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
AlySwim is a handmade swimwear and apparel brand based in North Carolina, creating reversible, high-quality pieces for the whole family — women, men, kids, and even matching dog bandanas! What started as a small creative project quickly grew into a full collection of custom, handmade designs that blend comfort, style, and functionality.
Each piece is made with care using fabrics sourced right here in the U.S., so you always know exactly where your clothing comes from and who’s making it. My mum and I work together to handcraft every item — from reversible swimwear to cozy apparel and accessories — always with the goal of making pieces that feel special, thoughtful, and made to last.
We pop up at local markets all throughout North Carolina and along the East Coast, so you can shop AlySwim in person, meet the makers, and feel the difference of handmade. To see where we’ll be next, visit alyswim.com

At AlySwim, everything is designed with intention — reversible, handmade, and made with love.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Networking & Building Connections
Networking has been one of the most valuable parts of my journey — both in music and now with AlySwim. When I was a music major, I learned early on how important it was to connect with other musicians. Once I started networking, I began seeing familiar faces at new events, sharing knowledge, and getting introduced to others who helped me develop my skills. The same goes for small business — I’ve carried that skill with me into every market I attend. Now, I often see familiar vendors who share tips about new markets, different cities, or even connect me with future customers or event organizers.
Advice: Be open to every conversation. Say hi to the people around you, ask questions, and support other small business owners. The more genuine connections you make, the stronger your community becomes — and that’s what keeps your business growing.
2. Adaptability & Willingness to Learn
When you’re running a small handmade business, every day is different. Some markets are amazing, and others might be slower — but each one teaches you something new. I’ve learned to stay flexible, keep learning from feedback, and adjust when things don’t go as planned.
Advice: Don’t expect perfection right away. Every experience — good or bad — helps you grow. Stay curious, keep learning new techniques, and be open to change.
3. Consistency & Dedication
Building AlySwim has taken time, patience, and a lot of dedication. From sewing each piece by hand to setting up for early-morning markets, consistency has been key. Showing up — even when things are uncertain — is what keeps the business moving forward.
Advice: Keep showing up for your goals, even when progress feels slow. Small, steady effort over time creates lasting results.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Absolutely! I’d love to collaborate with artists of all kinds — especially those who create repeating patterns, large paintings, or digital artwork that could be turned into fabric prints. There’s something so special about turning an artist’s work into wearable art. I’ve had the chance to partner with a few artists in the past for a fashion show, and it’s become such a fun and unique niche for AlySwim. It’s amazing to see people literally wearing someone’s artwork — it’s a creative way to share their art with a whole new audience.
AlySwim has also recently added an embroidery machine to our repertoire, which has opened up even more opportunities for collaboration. If you’re an artist or small business owner looking for custom embroidered shirts, sweatshirts, bags, or other pieces, I’d love to work together! We can embroider words, phrases, designs, or even upload your own logos — making each item totally custom and one of a kind.
