We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful David “DJ Chuck T” Thrower. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with David “DJ Chuck T” below.
Hi David “DJ Chuck T”, appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?
My self discipline comes from watching other people fail by focusing on distractions and not their true purpose. Most people know what it is they want to do or the type of person they want to become, but they can never achieve those goals because they get put off course by meaningless pleasures and vices. I’ve watched quite a bit of talented people fail over the years by losing focus. These days we have the social media algorithm pushing death, destruction, fake news, sex, vacations, and material wealth in our faces constantly and we dont even realize it. It’s harder to stay focued and discipline now more than ever. I use the negativity as fuel to stay focused. Sometimes you have to find an imaginary enemy so it can push you to be greater. My imaginary enemy is failure. Everyday I try to wake up and kick its ass!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’ve been in the music business for over 23 years and counting. I started off as a recording artist and I went on to try my hand production, engineering, artist management, and even running an indie record label. I fell in love with DJing though! That was my true passion….my true calling. I love the thrill of being able to control peoples moods and emotions through music. I can curate a set of songs that can make people want to cry, laugh, fight, fall in love, or dance until their feet hurt. Most people know me from my award winning mixtapes. I had the “Down South Slangin'” mixtape series that focused on breaking new and exclusive music from Southern Hip-Hop artists, and my “Sexxxplicit R&B” mixtapes focused on doing the same for R&B singers. At the height of my mixtape career I’d sell close to 7,000 CDs per month and ship them to over 35 states and 5 different countries. There was no better feeling than watching an artist or song start off as nothing and then blowing up a year or two later off of the buzz it generated from my mixtapes. I was a REAL RECORD BREAKER. Nowdays, I focus more on educating artists, producers, and song writers on the business of music. I’ve seen too many talented people sign horrible record deals and go broke. I’ve seen too many people cheat music creators out of their rights and their money. I didn’t just talk about doing something about it. I went out and did it…and I’m still doing it.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I’d most definitely say dedication, discipline, and a strong desire to serve. Those 3 traits have kept me thriving in this industry for over 23 years. Most people dont last 5 years in this business. For anyone trying to get into the music industry, I’d suggest paying close attention to only the people who have a track record for success. There are a lot of bitter people out here who’ve failed at doing music so they’ll try to scare you into not living your dreams. They profit off of giving out bad information. DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM!
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The Bible and the Koran. By far those 2 books have given me the knowledge I’ve needed to succeed in this business. You need inspiration from the most high to make it in this industry. It can get really wicked at times.
