We were lucky to catch up with Autumn Lehman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Autumn, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I first picked up the guitar when I was 15, but I didn’t take it seriously until years later, after the death of my brother. During that time, I was searching for a way to process the grief and emotions I couldn’t put into words. Music became that outlet, it was like therapy. Writing and playing helped me heal, one song at a time. Over time, music grew into something much deeper. My husband has been one of my biggest supporters. He encourages me to keep writing, playing, and sharing my songs even when it’s challenging. Our two children are also part of that journey. They’re learning music themselves, and sometimes they even accompany me, which makes it all the more meaningful.
Through music, I’ve found healing, connection, and a sense of purpose that ties together both my personal life and my creative one. It’s not just about the songs, it’s about the people I’ve met, the moments I share with my family, and the reminder that even out of loss, something beautiful can grow. Music continues to shape who I am as an artist, a wife, and a mother.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a singer-songwriter who writes and performs Americana folk music, a style that allows me to tell stories straight from the heart. My songs are inspired by life experiences, faith, and the people who’ve shaped who I am. My music has helped me heal, grow, and connect with others on a deeper level. I love exploring the full range of human experience. I write all kinds of songs. Some are heartfelt and reflective, while others are happy, funny, or drawn from childhood memories. What excites me most about my music is how it continues to evolve along with me. I’m not only writing from my own heart but also creating alongside my family. Sharing music together as a family makes it even more meaningful. My hope is that my music offers listeners a moment to breathe, to escape from the pressures of the world, and to simply feel understood or uplifted.
I have two new songs being released soon to all streaming platforms. Listeners can find my music under Autumn Lehman-GEM.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Humility, a willingness to be vulnerable, and a determination to grow and learn have all been essential in my journey. Music has a way of keeping you humble. You’re always learning, always improving, and often putting your heart out there for others to see. Being vulnerable enough to share real emotions, even when it’s uncomfortable, has helped me connect with people in a meaningful way. And staying determined to keep growing, both musically and personally, has kept me moving forward, even when things felt hard or uncertain. My advice for others, is don’t wait for everyone else’s approval. You’ll never please everyone, and that’s okay. Create because it means something to you. Be patient with yourself and embrace the learning process. And when you mess up, don’t apologize, just keep going. Most people won’t even notice, and even if they do, it’s part of what makes live music real and beautiful. Growth comes from showing up, being genuine, and learning to keep moving forward.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I’ve been incredibly blessed with support from so many people. My husband has been my biggest cheerleader. He was the one who encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and do my very first open mic. That moment truly set so much in motion. My parents have also been unwavering in their support, always believing in me and reminding me to keep going even when I doubted myself. I couldn’t have done this without them. Through music, God has placed the right people in my life at just the right times. Each one has helped me grow, given me confidence, and reminded me that I’m not walking this journey alone. My best friend Gary has probably had the most impact. He’s helped me write multiple songs and has been a constant source of encouragement and creativity. I also met him through open mic, along with two of my favorite songwriters, Jim and Sue, who have both been such an integral part of my musical journey.
Every one of these people has played a role in helping me become not only a better musician but also a braver and more grounded person.
