We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alicia Magner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alicia, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I don’t pay attention to it one bit. I do my own thing and have fun with my clients. Most of my clients have become like family and I feel like I am happier paying more attention to them than anything.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I started my photography business when my husband got deployed as a hobby. Through lots of trial and error, I eventually felt comfortable taking on clients.
I get most excited to see repeat client. Clients that I have captured almost every milestone for. I love watching their families grow.
I also love newborns. They are so fragile and such a challenge. It is so exciting when you get the pose the parents are hoping for.
I do many donations throughout the year and I sponsor many local events. I feel like it is a positive when I am able to give back to my community.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I took a customer service seminar when I was in college. I feel like that has really helped me build my skills and confidence in speaking to customers.
I have taken many classes and watched numerous videos to learn and grow. I try to teach myself something new as often as I can.
I have learned that photography is an investment. I invest quite a bit back into my business to keep up with new styles, fresh props for my studio as well as outside props. I like to create something new with each session.
The best advise I ever received was to never stop learning. I try to follow that as much as I can.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I take a break or a vacation. Everyone needs a little down time now and then to regroup and come back excited to work. I love exploring new places and trying new things.
Its ok to take time for yourself and your family.
