Meet Matt Green

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Matt Green. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Matt below.

Matt, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

I believe this starts with an understanding that we are all different and each have our own individual challenges. Everything stems from genuine gratitude and accurate, even harsh, self-awareness

As a child I was very shy and rarely spoke outside of my small friend group with the exception of while on the baseball field. When I got to high school I was cut from the varsity team and put on JV in the 9th and 10th grade. I did well on JV and obviously had two more years to work, with yet recognized for whatever reason I was not in the head coach’s master plan. I pulled the plug on high school baseball after 10th grade and gave up on any dream of playing varsity, college, or anything beyond that.

I found a new passion and by my senior year in high school knew that I wanted to pursue a career in music, which translated mostly into being a drummer in a fairly well know local band in the late 90’s. While this did not work out as intended either, I spent my early twenties often being the center of attention and even my parents supported my dream. This was strike two it gave me a great deal of confidence in myself and not necessarily what I was dedicating my time to at the time. I also learned that there are no limits to reinventing yourself. Just because others do not recognize your talents, or they are not as tangible, it does not mean they are not there. We all should know our worth.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

In 2012, at age 35, I found myself with 3 kids and no particular skills that would translate into a career. After spending a significant amount of time pursuing a career in music, which I consider the most unstructured career path, I chose to go back to school to pursue a career in Accounting, which I saw as arguably the most structured career path. I started classes and ultimately took 56 college courses which translated into a BS in Accounting and MBA with a concentration in accounting, and also became an IRS Enrolled Agent along the way.

I worked for a CPA Firm for roughly 5 years before going out on my own in August, 2020.

We have grown rapidly, specializing in tax preparation for individuals and businesses, and monthly accounting for small business owners. We also help with tax planning/strategy and advise on entity structure, etc. If someone needs simple bookkeeping, just needs to file their taxes, or need in-depth tax planning we can help.

I enjoy helping other entrepreneurs grow her/his business, save taxes, and ultimately improve quality of life for them and their families.

We will be working heavily the last part of 2025 improving processes and developing easily understood service option packages in the realm of CFO-like services and tax planning. I am excited to finally being on the verge of launching this after spending years in the research and development phase.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

My qualities or skills that have helped me in my journey are the ability to evolve in a structured and disciplined manner, understand that regardless of my profession sales are part of everything, and I also have the ability to show true care for those that need our help.

If I could only give one piece of advice, it would be you must come out of your comfort zone to achieve greatness. This pertains to everything and easily recognizable. If you are coming up with a plan to achieve success and any part of that is bypassed or left out for the simple fact “I do not want to” or “this is not for me” then it will not happen unless you have someone else that will do these for you and are very good at it.

For me I am mostly referring to sales, networking, public speaking or anything similar as most people avoid these. I accepted it and ran with it even though I was once paralyzed by even the thought of these.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

My number one obstacle at this exact moment would be to dispel the misconception that business owners should have separate providers for bookkeeping and tax services. While we sporadically add monthly clients we are extremely tax heavy which causes a seasonality in our business.

I believe this error in thinking stems from CPA Firms billing by the hour at a rate of anywhere from $150 to 500. Historically, CPA Firms would be the providers of both bookkeeping and tax preparation. Obviously, if your books take 2 hours a month paying $500 to 1,000 does not make sense. Hence the rise in “Bookkeepers” and this being their number one selling point. Bookkeepers that do not understand tax can create very large unexpected tax liabilities which I have seen cause serious damage to business owners.

Even worse is the rapid growth in providers of outsourced or fractional CFO services. Business owners do not normally understand these services and neither do most of the CFO service providers themselves. This is causing confusion and in many cases a lot of wasted money for business owners.

We are structured in a manner that allows us to offer bookkeeping services in a very cost-effective manner, comparable to those only offering bookkeeping. Once we have a clear message we will offer clear options for CFO services although we are calling it something totally different.

Overcoming this challenge will be two-fold; the packages we offer and then the message that follows to potential clients.

Our ultimate goal is to answer the question business owners have which is “how can I grow my business?”
