We caught up with the brilliant and insightful John Posey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
John, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
In the acting/writing world, you must have resilience and appreciate that there will be many “no’s” to your “yesses.”, Rejection is common and rarely has anything to do with the work you bring to the powers-to-be. There are so many factors and opinions involved that you could argue it is somewhat of a miracle when one does go your way.
My very first foray into Hollywood landed me the lead role in a brand-new American network television sitcom, a very popular one that would go on to air for over 12 years, not just in the U.S., but worldwide.
Some months after we shot the pilot of the series, I was released from the series at no fault of my own. My work was fine. It was a relationship issue, and another actor, the producer/creator had always wanted, was suddenly available. That producer went to the network to make the change.
I could have walked away from the business, but I took a different path. I assumed since I was cast over several hundred other actors, that I must be good enough to be in the room. I simply went to NY, studied, wrote, worked hard, and did well. Forty years later, I have a full body of work and am a produced screenwriter, a playwright and a working actor. in film, TV and stage.
I had similar experiences in the writing world. But, like acting, you take each project, one at a time, focus on that, put your best work forward, then let it go and move onto the next one.
I have been teaching for ten years and I do discuss these events with my students in the hopes that they will do the same and make their auditions the most focused five minutes they can produce, then move on to the next one, knowing you did your best

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a forty-year veteran of Hollywood as an actor and writer. I also teach acting to students globally.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Acting and writing require an imagination, innocence, vulnerability, listening, fearlessness and creativity.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Various acting and writing coaches and teachers I had since college.
