Meet Kristin Bushman

We were lucky to catch up with Kristin Bushman recently and have shared our conversation below.

Kristin , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

I was in an abusive relationship for a very long while. During this time, it felt as if I had lost part of myself. Being in constant fight or flight mode, I just focused on surviving day to day. Once I finally escaped that situation, it was as if a world of possibilities opened up for me. I started focusing on myself and what I wanted to do in life. I started creating more and more art as time went on. I started actually living, not merely surviving. My art has become such a huge part of my life, I can’t even imagine how I lived before without it. My oldest daughter has even told me that she wants to be an artist “like mommy.” Being able to inspire her has been more rewarding than any money I’ve made with my creations.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I create art out of skulls, bones, and teeth. I love being able to take something “gross” and transform it into something beautiful and interesting.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I think the three most important things for me were to have passion, creativity, and being able to keep trying after failure. I couldn’t tell you how many times an idea came to nothing, or it seemed like I just couldn’t think of anything that felt “good enough.” I think it’s important to keep trying, and to make time to keep creating.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

My biggest obstacle in the past year has been overcoming financial and health issues. I had a major surgery after injuring myself, and was unable to work at my main job, much less walk. My art was the only thing that kept me afloat and able to provide for my daughters. I’m still not where I want to be, but continuing to focus on furthering my art business and trying to attend markets/work on commissions has helped me get closer to my goal.
