Meet Dezi Cartier

We were lucky to catch up with Dezi Cartier recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Dezi , so happy to have you on the platform with us today and excited to chat about your lessons and insights. Our ability to make good decisions can massively impact our lives, careers and relationships and so it would be very helpful to hear about how you built your decision-making skills.

Good question, I can’t decide. I kid. Decision making comes from the heart for me I’d say ninety – nine point nine percent of the time. And I know that is not what people want to hear or the answer you’re supposed to give but for me it’s done alright. Of course I am human and can be wrong and then whether it is personal or business related you learn something from it. My big thing is when it comes to making decisions is that I want to lead with something when there is no way to tell what is the right choice I can trust who I am and what would Dezi do. For me what’s important in making high level decisions and also easy everyday ones is leading with integrity and being human. What would a good human do and when you think that way you can’t go wrong truly inside. We need to decide with love and empathy when it is not about us and the same thing when the decision is about us.

It’s a muscle and of course I struggle with it too even in this day sometimes but I let my heart make those because the heart will lead you down the “right” path and what you should be deciding. Sometimes in life there is not a “right” or “wrong” decision. It is what’s most in tune with who you are. Which is also hard to know sometimes when you are figuring out who you are. So that’s why I say choosing love and choosing compassion will take you places that you never even saw initially. On that same token choosing passion over pleasure can be a really hard choice as well. I’m guilty of seeing both sides of that equation especially as I grow up.

I wish anyone faced with a hard decision peace of mind. I’ve had a plethora of them throughout my life and when I thought I made the wrong decision I’ve been shown something that is insurance from my heart that I did make the right one. Business I think is logistically sound and what people want and will tell you. Good luck justifying that in everyday life as well as optics wise which this day in age is something to account for. I speak on solely accounting for my actions I am not here to tell you what to do or how to live your truth but to share what has happened from somebody who has tried it more than once and followed that train of thought. We all have different lives, backgrounds, and decisions to make. What may have worked well for me may not be the answer for you and vice versa. But you know what? We can all relate and be on the same page by listening to our hearts and letting our gut be insurance.

When I was going to college, I knew I was not being true to myself I wouldn’t be where I am today had I not had the courage to listen and trust myself. I had to trust fate and remove myself to let Dezi have a chance to do things my way. Blindly trusting at the time because I did not know what would happen if I threw away something I had worked for. That is one of many examples where doubt surfaces and you have let another feeling or desire overpower it. All the time we hear opinions from others about our own life and nobody can do it like you. Nobody knows what’s best except for you. I know that sounds crazy and of course there is meaning in being a good listener I mean truly. Listen to yourself not everybody else. At the end of the day it’s you that has to live with the decision. I’ve made many mistakes in life and that is the beauty of it when you don’t know what to do or decide – let your heart take the wheel. I know this is not the poplar opinion maybe but then you can’t go wrong in life. You gotta have heart. Even if it hurts no matter what it is you know you listened to yourself and that feeling inside. Which is beautiful. Every action is caused by a reaction. Which the reaction is your decision.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I have been many different things over the years and I think the things that have always kept me the most excited are the those small moments when you are a kid and think of something you want. As a kid I always loved movies and music. I think that was the first thing I can remember enjoying as a child. So growing up I would always day dream this or that and you feel crazy sometimes. But I kind of always followed those feelings and leading with the heart over reason too. Which sometimes that works great sometimes it does not. Charge it to the game. I started really doing theatre and local community theatres which led to some modeling and then acting too but I was so young I never made it big from that by any means. But I loved it and have a lot of fun stories from it. I really was not super into school but I still did well and did the college thing for a hot second. I’d always had a job as a teenager and since I left school I still had to get a job. So for I mean for years working so many honestly legendary random jobs. So much fun but at the same time it was work and I didn’t go to college so I had put all my faith in pursuing the dreams at that point.

So with that said my current pursuit is all the fun stuff in life. I have a new song I’m working on as well my professional career they are both in tune with one another.

I think all the life I had experienced too I mean it just teaches you things. Those young early years when you are out on there on your own and what you get into are so special. It definitely shaped and built a foundation of work ethic for me but also figuring it out. I’m grateful for that. I think a big thing that helped keep me where I was supposed to be was leading with just love. Like we gotta care about each other and what others have to say. You make so many great friends and memories that way. So to be honest the tale is yet to finish being written.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

It is so fun to be mysterious but show yourself when you need and are supposed to. I think for me ambiguity has aided me in a way where somebody is probably does he does this or does he do that? But just being you and not having buyers remorse about it. I always say that and I know it sounds corny but is for me true like all the moments that I’m like maybe I should said that or been that way it never is other than how it was supposed to be one way or the other. So authenticity form within I think goes such a long way in life.

Another key moment and something I also talk about a lot that maybe seems rather impractical these days is following your heart. So if you’re heart is to be a professional yo yo’er that’s sick and you can do that these days. Maybe that’s too niche of an example you get the idea! I have always been clear about what I want from life and even when it wasn’t there it was still in my head. At at the same time there are so many moments where I am figuring it out as I go along. Like do you remember when you’re a kid and everyone always asks you what you want to be when you grow up? I think what’s cool about that is if you were to ask the same person that question now how much life has changed us to want to pursue things that are not our passion maybe but will bring to our life things we are passionate about. And that is OK. The story is going to be rewritten and edited, tweaked, all that jazz until we find the level of happiness we are ok with. I think I’ve always been a I want more person and at times that has bitten in the bum. It has also propelled me. I’m very honest about that part because it is not bad to want things. I think it’s weirder if we don’t want things. This goes way beyond material. It only get’s more complicated past material and then we are into that really deep stuff like who am I, what is my purpose, is my job right for me and the list goes on. So let’s give ourselves some grace – take the scary steps of working on what it is that if money was never created we would spend everyday doing.

Niche is something too that I like the idea of now. I heard this thing of like there will never be a shortage of tax law lawyers and they will always have a job. It is true, things that are niche tend to always have a demand and sometimes more demand than seats at the table. So I think being a good person and finding your niche even if it is in something huge like real estate or music. It comes back to being yourself and no matter what you do showing and letting it be apart of whatever it is in life we are involved in. I remember when I was a server I of course never saw it as this in the moment you start up conversation with literally random people all day. So you know looking back it is like well ok that was great batting practice because not only do I remember very small details of what somebody has said but when I hop in a meeting with someone big or small I’m Dezi and I’d love to talk to you.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

Oh me never just kidding um all the time. This last year of my life was crazy in the best ways possible and also the craziest ways possible. As a kid I had this vision of like oh when you are so and so age or this happens life just stops being crazy. So I found out that’s not true um and that’s how life goes. I told this to a buddy was going through something yo take it to the face that’s all you can do. And I’ve had to take some crazy ones to the face. That is my best advice when you feel overwhelmed take to the face and let what you love help you figure it out.

Art is my compass and you’re probably like what does he even mean. Sure. But you got to tap into those things you love and it does not always to be deep but fall in love with album again. Talk to that person you haven’t in years. Have a meaningful chat or stupid fun chat. Whatever it is, take it and let that help you get through what you’re going through. Because life does not stop. We never stop figuring it out and what you want, when you get it you want something else too. It never ends and I don’t think it’s supposed to.

Let’s get off the record for a sec. Once of the craziest feelings in life is when things are going great and maybe you do something you have always wanted to do or whatever it is and you are sad about something or something goes terribly wrong. Bonkers of a feeling. Like you know the internet saying oh I’d rather cry in a lambo over something and it’s like no! I’d rather just not cry at all haha. It’s so silly but yo everybody’s gonna go through something and man when it is bad a lambo or whatever material item people equate to success none of that matters. What can help though is what are our roots are made out of whether it is family, film, music, food, thinking about that purpose stuff goes gets you home safe.

I’m always going to say that there is something special about art and when it comes to dealing with life. But we gotta do and think about what makes us happy or even just feel good. Something that will give you hope and build our confidence in ourselves. To trust ourselves but also love ourselves. I would say that you should totally put some music on and face the tunes. I have been overwhelmed to the point where I can’t even listen to music but there’s beauty in pain and you will never feel it as beauty but it looks beautiful on you after you heal.
