We were lucky to catch up with Matthew Pitts recently and have shared our conversation below.
Matthew , thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
I spent a considerable amount of my life in sort of a doomsday cult. Really my formative years. I was raised in it. I didn’t have any kind of thought of attaining the things that I dream of in this life. It wasn’t until I was well into my 20’s that I really had a belief in my vision and ambition as an artist. So no matter what pitfalls I encounter I guess I’m too new to optimism to be jaded now. IDK. Give me a few years. But for now I’m just my next opportunity away from my next opportunity.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m an all around storyteller. I love to write. So I write poems, short stories, monologues and scripts. I develop those ideas through film and stage performance. Generally the end funnel is a short film project these days. I’m incredibly excited about the fact of having the films out in the world. I’ve been really fortunate to have success in getting poetry published as well as films screened in both festivals as well as gallery exhibitions.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Poetry taught me that you can say everything more beautifully. That’s kind of how I think of poems sometimes. I want to curate something to tell a story so that goes for the words, to the language, etc.
Film taught me patience. When working with talent, and crew, and really myself, take the time to take time.
Submitting to film festivals taught me that whatever your dream is is gonna take more than your first try. Artists get really frustrated by rejection but rejection really needs to be your best friend. But whenever I got accepted to something it was surrounded by other rejections. It’s just a part of life. If you’re not seeing success you’re not trying enough but if you’re not seeing rejection, you’re not trying at all.

Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
Loving my family. Writing movies and petting dogs.
