Meet Caroline Don

We recently connected with Caroline Don and have shared our conversation below.

Caroline, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

Creativity is so vital to Fairy Tails Entertainment, and it takes a lot of work to keep things fresh. I’ve always been an artist, and when turning that into work, I sometimes struggled to find balance between personal art and artistic work. Over the years I’ve found that maintain my personal art, like drawing, costuming, playing games, and mermaiding for fun, is essential to making sure the business stays vibrant and vitalized. A lot of my personal art inspires new things I want to bring into Fairy Tails like new costume pieces or new performances. S0 making time for those things, along with listening to my performers feedback, really keeps the creativity flowing.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am the owner and a performer at Fairy Tails Entertainment, a performance troupe that specializes in mermaid entertainment. So many things are exciting about my line of work, but I find the most rewarding to be hearing the happiness from people meeting/seeing a real live mermaid. We get these incredibly joyful reactions from people of every single age who just get overwhelmed by the magic we bring to life. It’s hard to describe the feeling we get as performers from these interactions, but it’s so inspiring.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Three of the most important things when it comes to being a professional mermaid are water safety, swimming skills, and performance ability. Water safety is the highest priority in our line of work as there should always have someone dedicated to insuring the performer’s wellbeing, and the performer needs to be able to remove their costume rapidly in case of emergencies. A performer needs to practice their swimming skills both in and out of costume constantly to ensure they keep their skills sharp and breath hold steady. Finally, performance and improv skills are a must because many events involve heavy guest interaction.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I would love to partner with a variety of other performers and/or event venues. Building even more unique performances to offer would be great, as well as partnering with event spaces to offer our services to their clients. Mermaids can add a splash of magic and wonder to any event. We’d also love to partner with more aquariums to bring a one of a kind show to them.
