Meet Ligia Moreira

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ligia Moreira a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Ligia, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

I get my resilience from my passion for creating and my belief that fashion is more than clothes, it’s storytelling through design. Every challenge I’ve faced has pushed me to grow, to innovate, and to stay true to my vision. My resilience comes from knowing that each collection I create can inspire others, and that’s what keeps me moving forward, no matter how difficult the journey gets.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

As a Garífuna fashion designer, I create pieces that celebrate culture, strength, and identity. My brand, Garifashion, is all about blending traditional Garífuna roots with modern, bold designs that empower women of all shapes and backgrounds. Each piece tells a story — from the vibrant colors inspired by the Garífuna flag to the handmade details that reflect resilience and pride.

What excites me the most about my work is seeing how fashion becomes a language — one that speaks of heritage, confidence, and unity. I design not just to make people look beautiful, but to help them feel powerful and seen.

Right now, I’m thrilled to be curating my first fashion show, which will also be part of a docuseries showcasing the journey of emerging designers. It’s more than just a runway, it’s a movement to spotlight creative voices and cultural stories that deserve to be seen and celebrated.

Garifashion continues to evolve, but one thing will never change: every design I create carries a piece of my Garífuna soul.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Vision;
has always been at the heart of everything I do. It’s what allows me to tell stories through fabric, especially stories that reflect culture, identity, and empowerment. For new designers, I’d say: take time to really define your “why.” Your vision is what will separate you from trends and keep your work authentic.

Resilience;
kept me moving forward when things didn’t go as planned ,from design challenges to production delays. The fashion world isn’t always glamorous behind the scenes, so learning to see setbacks as lessons instead of failures is key.

And finally, craftsmanship;
knowing your materials, understanding fit, and paying attention to detail ,that’s what transforms ideas into wearable art. My advice: never stop learning. Take classes, ask questions, experiment, and respect the process.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

As a fashion designer, I’d say the people who’ve been most helpful in my journey are the mentors and creative peers who truly believed in my vision, even when it was still taking shape. I’ve learned so much from other designers who were generous enough to share their knowledge, from pattern-making tips to navigating the business side of fashion.

I also have to credit my family and cultural roots for grounding me and reminding me why I create, to tell stories through fabric and design. Their encouragement gave me the strength to push through challenges and stay authentic.

And honestly, experience itself has been one of my best teachers. Every setback, every show, every collection taught me something new about resilience, innovation, and staying true to my creative voice.
