We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lyle Clark a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lyle, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
Probably from knowing what it’s like to need a little help. I’ve had people give me chances I didn’t necessarily earn on paper, no college here. So if I can help a customer, racer, or friend get where they’re trying to go, I try to do that. Working with racers like Ashley Afdahl and Tony has been a real blessing. They’ve become more like extended family, and my own family has supported that from the start. That mix of trust and respect is a big part of why I keep giving back.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am that guy you often here about that is the owner, the guy that takes out the trash and more. But I love it.
I am celebrating 20 years in business this year, and going for the next mile marker of 25 years.
Last year and this year my company has developed a new security system when holes were noticed with the top system we had. And this we another hole was noticed in regards to keypads and our niche of trailer security systems.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Not being afraid of getting in the trenches and actually doing the hard work.
Listening. Listen to those around me for what is real or platitudes.
Sharing.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
Believe it or not, I am still trying to get past the pandemic. Parts shortages and lack of sales put a huge hurt on us. We still have items that have a 30 week lead time.
One item we had issues with was our boxes we install the actual alarm system into. 8 weeks at times and really priced high. So I hired a designer and purchased a couple of 3D printers, and now we make our own when we need them, at a huge saving to the wallet.
