Meet Leslie Gutierrez

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Leslie Gutierrez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Leslie, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?

My self-care time is often spent outdoors playing pickleball or sewing and creating handmade pieces. These activities give me a sense of balance and fulfillment outside of work. Making space for hobbies that differ from my daily responsibilities helps me recharge and avoid burnout.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I went to school for counseling and graduated from my Master’s in 2024. Since then, I am a mental health counselor that provides extra support to people going through life’s challenges. I am working towards full licensure, so I am accruing hours towards my full license.
In 2020, I picked up sewing as a hobby, as most people were trying to learn something new during that time because of quarantine. My mom who sews began to teach me how to use a sewing machine. From there, I was determined to buy my own. I started buying thrifted clothes and would “upcycle” them into completely different things. As college got busier and I began my master’s program, it was harder and harder to fine time with working and going to school. Fast forward after graduation and I’m in my career, I decide to start sewing again after watching a video of someone doing it. I began to remember the reason why I wanted to start sewing things! This time I started sewing and creating book covers, tote bags, pouches, etc. Then my brand SeamsLes came to light and I started selling my creations. People started loving them! I had my first art market where it was a success and since then I am continuing to expand myself and trying to grow my small business

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

MY work ethic, being detailed-oriented, and determination! My advice is find that one thing that brings you joy and continue to do it! You never know how far it’ll take you

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

The most impactful thing has been my parents coming to the United States to provide a better opportunity for me and my sisters.
