Meet Ash Lucas

We recently connected with Ash Lucas and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Ash, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.

When I was younger I wasn’t much of an optimist; I don’t believe many of us are at a younger age. I think with time and the older I got I became optimistic about anything and everything coming my way. Once I started putting out a positive view on the way I was thinking, perceiving, understanding, and accepting there was almost a shift I could feel–both mentally and physically . Things didn’t seem so drastic or disheveled or disastrous anymore. Someone once told me that I have no control over what happens, because whatever is going to happen will happen regardless. In all honesty, that is something I truly believe and live by now. For me, I’d rather look at a situation with a positive mindset and see as many possible outcomes that I can (good, bad, and everything in between). Life isn’t perfect for anyone and it won’t ever be however, you do get more with honey than you do with vinegar. With that being said, the way I react to something going on in my life is the one thing that I have control of. I’d rather approach life with love, humility, gratitude, and positivity rather than anything less than. Having a negative outlook in general is time consuming and energy draining it’s something that I no longer have room in my life for. All of us are here only once and for a short amount of time why waist it being anything other than optimistic.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I have always been a creative soul. I’ve dabbled with writing throughout my life and in March of 2021 I up and quit my office job to pursue my writing career full-time. I published my first book back in July of 2024. It’s a children’s book called The Many Adventures of Captain Clark: Dinosaur Land. I have several different writing projects that I’m currently working on–including the sequel to the first Captain Clark book. I’m always open to new ideas that pop into my head, so writing is a constant for me. In the Summer of 2025 I completed the manuscript for my debut novel–a sports romance–which I am currently working on getting published by the end of this year.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

My three would be having a passion for the craft, determination mixed with discipline, and an open mind to let your creativity ooze out of you onto the paper evoking your future readers to be consumed in a whirlwind escapade of countless emotions.

The biggest piece of advice I got was to…just write. This is something I tell anyone who says that they want to write a book. Do it! One of the first things I learned about writing is that writers should write every day. You have to trust that your first draft is just that, it’s the first, it’s probably going to suck, but you’re just getting the idea out of your head and onto paper. You’ll have time to edit and shuffle things around to perfect it. I’m also an avid reader, so one of my worries was that my story would sound like something that is already written, but here’s the thing, the story you are trying to convey hasn’t been written by YOU yet, so just write it regardless of similarities to the other millions of books out there. We all have different voices that deserve to be heard. Keep in mind that there are several tools out there nowadays to help writers and future authors succeed–find what works for you and shoot for the stars.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?

It would be an understatement to say that I read a lot. One of the books recommended to me that helped me develop my writing craft a little bit better is called Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within by Natalie Goldberg. This book is essentially a guide to the art of writing, but as a meditative practice as opposed to writing being something that needs to be tediously perfected over and over until it’s right. Writing should be fun. It’s expressing your creative side out loud. This book reminded me of the person that I am. It felt like Natalie was my writing coach telling me that I was going to succeed no matter what. Her words were incredibly impactful and made me feel a little less critical of my perfectionist self. One of the things that stuck with me was: “Learning to write is not a linear process. There is no logical A-to-B-to-C way to become a good writer. One neat truth about writing cannot answer it all. There are many truths.” I am obsessed with a book that can evoke any type of emotion through its words alone making me feel said emotion. Natalie has a chapter on the old writing adage of “don’t tell, but show.” She says : “Writing is not psychology. We do not talk ‘about’ feelings. Instead the writer feels and through her words awakens those feelings in the reader.” Anytime I talk about a book I’m reading I’ve always said that to me a good book is a book that can get me to feel any type of emotion while reading the words. If I can feel warm happiness, giddy excitement, crushing sorrow making me cry, or rage that makes me slam the book closed because I’m mad then that’s a damn good book in my opinion. I can only hope that I have a fraction of that type of talent to get a reader to feel those things with my words. Natalie Goldberg’s guidance in this book has truly helped add more knowledge to my writing journey. It’s a book that I highly recommend to writers.
