We recently connected with Gary Schneider and have shared our conversation below.
Gary, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I’ve always enjoyed sports and staying in shape. Over the years I’ve learned the importance of exercise, not just for aesthetics but for health reasons. Exercise does so many positive things for your body; it improves cardiovascular health, help with weight management, bone density, strength, balance, better posture and flexible mobility. As a personal trainer, I enjoy seeing people progress with resistance training and other forms of exercise. These individuals also improve their diet and sleep better. It’s so important to exercise.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a personal trainer and fitness instructor at Santa Fe Senior Fit, Quail Run and several senior living facilities. I specialize in working with seniors and tennis athletes. I train people individually and instruct several classes such as chair exercises and balance/stability, and occasionally hold workshops. As we grow old, we lose bone density, mobility, strength and sometimes balance. I work with all types of people, some with weight, balance and strength issues as well as with people who have osteoporosis, hypertension and other illnesses. Even with illnesses, you can and should exercise to help improve your health. Also, tennis is the best sport for adding longevity to your life. If you have played tennis continually for quite some time, you will add years to your life. I am a believer in exercise helps with longevity and making the last few years of your life healthy. Once we hit 75, research shows people drop off drastically in strength and in other areas. You can begin exercising at any age, so I encourage people who don’t to do so. 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week is the minimum recommendation to help improve your health.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Some of the best qualities you can have is to listen and learn from others, research and read up on what you do and have a passion for what you do. If you really enjoy what you do, you will continue to grow and learn. Staying abreast of current trends, research and getting feedback are also vitally important.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
I read up quite a bit on fitness and health and one of the best books I’ve read is “Outlive” by Dr. Peter Attia. He is a well known doctor, fitness expert and author. He received his medical degree at Stanford and trained at John Hopkins and NIH as a surgical oncology fellow at the National Cancer Institute. His focus is on longevity and how to live longer better. His book is filled with information on how to do just that. In my field, it is important to stay abreast of advances in medicine and fitness. A new trend is doing mental tasks, such as counting backwards from 100 by 7 while doing an exercise. By performing both, you can increase your neural pathways which help improve your mental capacity.
