We recently connected with Armando Godinez Jr. and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Armando, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Growing up in a small rural farming town and not being well off from a social economic standpoint, we had to work hard for everything we had. I had a summer job at a young age that taught me the importance of working to make my own money for school clothes an school supplies for that upcoming school year. That work ethic was engrained in me early on because I saw how hard my father worked day in and day out.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a multi-disciplinary graphic designer, specializing in logos, branding, digital, publication, and advertising. I cut my teeth in the advertising industry for more than 11 years honing my skillset and bringing value to various industry clients in Lubbock and the surrounding areas. When you boil it all down what I do is problem solving with my creative skillset and trying to find solutions to projects.
I graduated from Texas Tech in 2004 with a bachelor’s in graphic design and I currently hold the role of Associate Director of Advancement Design and had a previous role as Creative Lead for Evermore Magazine, which is the official publication of Texas Tech University.
I also have contributed as an adjunct professor since 2015 for the TTU School of Art and help bring my industry knowledge and help shape the next generation of graphic designers.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I’ve learned quite a bit about problem solving, how to pitch ideas to clients and those in leadership positions and helping bring those ideas and concepts to life with my work or through leadership and mentoring my team members.
I believe that creatives need to learn to be adaptable, whether you’re young or you’ve been in the industry for some time. Things happen and that is where the problem-solving aspect comes into play and how you approach a problem and find a solution.
The other aspect is that if you want to do this for the long haul, you need to be resilient and keep showing up, keep generating ideas and keep making something everyday.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
It’s cliche but pause what you’re doing and take a walk or work on something else to help reset your mind. As creatives it is hard to always generate new ideas on demand and so doing something other than what you’re working on can help give some clarity and give you a reset.
