We were lucky to catch up with Jackai Yip recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jackai, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
My purpose didn’t arrive overnight—it grew from the roots of my own story.
I was raised by a single immigrant mother who, with the support of her family, showed me the power of community and perseverance. From a young age, I was drawn to the idea of “delivering babies” and becoming an obstetrician. It felt like a calling even then, though I couldn’t have imagined what form it would take later in life.
As my journey unfolded, I stepped into the roles of Physician Assistant and childbirth educator—paths that weren’t quite what I pictured as a little girl, but ultimately became even more meaningful. Through creating Our BirthRoom®, I realized my true passion wasn’t just about the moment a baby is born—it was about the family that begins at that moment. The parents, the partnership, the environment that welcomes that new life into the world.
Today, I help babies enter peaceful, calm settings while guiding couples to become the engaged, empowered team their child needs from day one. Because when a baby arrives into a strong, connected family system, that child has the foundation to thrive—and that, to me, is the true beginning of something beautiful.
Each time I see a couple move from fear to confidence, or a baby born into love and presence, I’m reminded of why I do this work. My purpose is simple yet profound: to help build beginnings that ripple outward into healthier, happier generations.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
When I became pregnant for the first time, my joy quickly collided with fear—fear of childbirth, fear of dying in a system that has failed too many women who look like me, fear that my story as a mother might end before it began. I couldn’t ignore that fear, so I began searching for a better way to give birth.
That search didn’t just change my story—it revealed my purpose to help others rewrite their own stories through empowered birth experiences.
I’m the founder of Our BirthRoom®, where we help first-time parents—and those seeking a more positive or redemptive birth experience—prepare for a confident, natural birth together.
Our flagship program, Our BirthRoom Academy™, guides couples through a proven 10-step system that equips them to work with labor, not against it, and trains partners to become what we call ‘BirthRoom Daddy Doulas™.’ Our goal is simple: no more birth fear—just informed, empowered, and connected parents ready to welcome their baby with confidence.
What makes our work so meaningful is that we don’t just teach birth prep—we’ve lived it. My husband, Stephen, and I bring over 25 years of combined medical experience as a Physician Assistant and Family Physician—and we’ve had four natural births of our own. We teach together because we believe birth should be prepared for as a team.
Our approach blends the best of both worlds:
🩺 Medical & holistic: combining the wisdom of natural birth with evidence-based clinical insight.
🤝 Team-based: this isn’t a class where mom listens while dad checks out—it’s full-on, hands-on, confidence-building preparation for both parents.
💻 Flexible & modern: on-demand and hybrid options that fit real family schedules.
🙏 Faith-friendly: weaving in encouragement, scripture, and mindset practices for families who want that foundation.
Seeing couples transform from anxious and unsure to calm, connected, and capable is what excites me most. When a baby is born into peace and partnership, it changes everything—not just that day, but for generations.
We also support families through the crucial fourth trimester—covering breastfeeding, birth recovery, and postpartum care in Postpartum Reset™. Our newest offering, Birth Advocate Blueprint™, is a mini course that helps expectant parents quickly learn how to communicate effectively with their birth team and advocate for the birth they want, even under pressure.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
When I look back, three qualities have shaped every step of my journey: perseverance, faith in Jesus, and a willingness to learn quickly.
As the daughter of an immigrant and a single mother, my path could have easily followed the statistics. But God had a different plan—one that turned every challenge into preparation for my purpose.
Perseverance has been essential. Nothing worthwhile in my life has come without persistence—whether it was pushing through years of study to become a Physician Assistant, navigating infertility to become a mother to four incredible children, or building Our BirthRoom® from the ground up. There were many moments when I could have stopped, but perseverance kept me grounded in the bigger vision and reminded me that waiting seasons can still be working seasons.
Faith in Jesus has been my anchor. There have been countless times when the path forward wasn’t clear—when logic said “give up,” but faith said “move.” My life and career have been a continual exercise in trusting God’s timing and direction. Belief comes first. It’s what allows you to take the right steps toward any goal, even when you can’t see the full picture.
And finally, the ability to learn new skills fast has been a quiet but powerful tool. Every new chapter—whether in medicine, motherhood, or entrepreneurship—has required me to become a student again. Learning to pivot, acquire new knowledge quickly, and implement it with confidence has been key to growth in every season.
My advice for anyone early in their journey is this: believe first, learn second, move third. Believe that what’s in your heart is there for a reason. Learn what you need to honor that calling. Then move—when God says move. It’s never about being ready; it’s about being willing.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
Our ideal clients are expectant parents who want more than just information—they want transformation.
We serve two main types of parents:
👶 The “Wait… What Did I Just Sign Up For?” Parent — Newly pregnant and knee-deep in books and Google spirals, wondering what a contraction actually feels like, how their partner can help, and how to avoid interventions they didn’t ask for. Inside Our BirthRoom Academy™, we take them from overwhelmed to empowered with a simple, step-by-step roadmap that replaces fear with confidence.
🌿 The “This Time, We’re Doing It Differently” Parent — Parents who want a natural or low-intervention birth, or who had a previous experience that left them feeling rushed, unheard, or out of control. They’re ready to walk in with intention—to advocate for their preferences, stay grounded through labor, and have a birth that truly aligns with their values.
We serve couples who are curious and ready to take an active role in their birth. They want to feel confident, informed, and connected as they bring new life into the world. And we help them do exactly that—through evidence-based education, partner-centered coaching, and heartfelt encouragement that transforms their fear into confidence.
We also love collaborating with birth professionals—midwives, doulas, OBs, chiropractors, acupuncturists, massage therapists, and other holistic providers—who share our heart for empowering families. Collaboration allows us to reach even more parents with resources, education, and community support.
