We were lucky to catch up with Southern Soul Damo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Southern Soul, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
As I’m sure it’s quite obvious that music is my purpose, I didn’t find the music because it’s been in me since head start. I must admit, I lost the music somewhere along the way after leaving college. But my purpose, the music, it found me in 2022 when I became homeless and living out of my 2015 Gold Impala. I had no path, I had no dreams, & I had no passion at the time. My purpose found me at a time I needed hope and a reason to keep going the most.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I make blues music, preferably Southern Soul Blues. The most exciting thing about it to me is the emotional side you have to tap into. I say that because I’m an emotional guy so the feelings and the words come easy to me. My brand is quite simple: Family, Fun, & Soul. My music is made to uplift, bring together, & tell unique stories whether true or created in my mind. Currently my next performance is November 29th in Indianola Mississippi at Club Ebony. Also I’m in the process of working on my 2026 EP following my 2025 EP released in July titled New Era Of Southern Soul Blues.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The main three things that were and still are most impactful in my journey has to be patience, versatility, & hard work. My advice to those that are in the early stages is to never give up. Having the patience, being versatile, & having a major work ethic will be all null & void if you quit. Don’t listen to those who’ve never done what you are doing. You are unique and have the God given ability for a reason.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
The number one obstacle for me is the mental war between being a family provider & being an artist. Life happens and it happened to me. I recently lost my job and I’m at a crossroads right now. It’s difficult dealing with the emotional ups & downs of trying to stay positive and believe something better is coming for me and my family. Every man wants to be a good husband and father & every man wants to give his all when it comes to his dream(s). My challenge is to find balance in the two. With God it’s very possible to achieve.
