We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nibu Abraham a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nibu , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Purpose isn’t something you stumble upon by following the crowd. It’s something you uncover by listening to yourself—especially when the world is telling you to be someone else.
I’m Nibu Abraham, cofounder of Spindia, a monthly IndoHouse night at the House of Blues in Houston, now proudly in its second year. I also co-host GenerAsian Radio, which has been broadcasting for over two decades. Both projects were born from a desire to create space for music and culture that felt true to who we are—not what was trending.
When I started out, I saw a lot of people trying to shape themselves to fit what was popular. But I realized early on that chasing trends is a race with no finish line. Instead, I chose to believe in my own voice. I leaned into the sounds that moved me, the stories that mattered to my community, and the energy that felt real.
Spindia wasn’t created to follow a wave—it was created to honor one. IndoHouse music is vibrant, layered, and deeply rooted. We built a platform for it not because it was mainstream, but because it deserved to be heard. And when you build something from a place of authenticity, people respond. They feel the intention. They show up.
GenerAsian Radio is proof of that. For over twenty years, we’ve held space for voices that often go unheard. We’ve stayed consistent, not because it was easy, but because it was meaningful. That kind of longevity doesn’t come from chasing attention—it comes from staying true to your purpose.
So if you’re searching for yours, don’t look outward. Look inward. Trust your instincts. Believe in your perspective. Because the most powerful thing you can do is show up as yourself—and keep showing up, even when it’s not the popular choice.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Spindia is a monthly night dedicated to celebrating the vibrant rhythms of ethnic and global house music. Hosted at the iconic House of Blues Foundation Room in Houston, the event provides a creative platform for DJs to showcase diverse subgenres like Afro House, Indo House, Latin House, and other world-inspired sounds that fuse traditional roots with modern electronic energy.
Each edition of Spindia highlights both local and international talent, cultivating a space where cultures meet on the dance floor and sound becomes a bridge between continents. Beyond the live experience, Spindia also curates a YouTube channel featuring the best recorded sets, giving audiences around the world a glimpse into Houston’s growing global house scene.
Whether you’re a deep house purist, a lover of percussion-heavy beats, or simply seeking a night of connection through music, Spindia offers a pulse that’s both soulful and universal.
Generasian Radio is a groundbreaking radio show that has been amplifying the voices and sounds of the Asian and South Asian diaspora through music, culture, and conversation. Originating in Houston, Texas, the show blends genres from Bollywood beats and K-pop to Indo House, Desi Hip-Hop, and Pan-Asian electronic music, creating a dynamic listening experience that celebrates cross-cultural creativity and identity.
More than just a broadcast, Generasian Radio serves as a cultural platform—spotlighting artists, DJs, and creators who are redefining what it means to be Asian in today’s global music landscape.
In addition to its on-air programming, the Generasian Radio YouTube channel extends the experience visually, featuring interviews, live DJ sets, event recaps, and exclusive performances, connecting audiences worldwide to the heartbeat of Asian fusion sound.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, three experiences have been especially impactful in shaping my journey. First, being a punk musician in bands like No Resistance and The Tomfooligans taught me the raw power of community, self-expression, and DIY creativity. Second, my time as a DJ for Generasian Radio helped me understand how to read and move a dancefloor—how rhythm connects people across cultures. And third, working as a music journalist for various zines and publications deepened my ability to listen critically, tell stories through sound, and document the pulse of underground music scenes.
For those early in their creative journey, the best thing you can do is immerse yourself fully—don’t wait for permission to start. Play in bands, make mixes, write about what moves you. Each experience builds a different muscle: collaboration teaches humility and persistence, DJing sharpens your instinct for energy and connection, and writing trains you to reflect and communicate what you’ve learned. Stay curious, say yes to opportunities that challenge you, and embrace the DIY mindset—because the most valuable growth often happens outside of formal paths, in the messy, hands-on spaces where you’re forced to figure things out for yourself.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes — I’m always open to collaborating with creative folks who are curious about exploring sounds from around the world. I’m especially interested in working with folk artists who want to experiment with electronic production, and electronic musicians who are eager to sample, remix, or reimagine traditional and folk sounds in new ways. If you’re passionate about blending cultures, textures, and rhythms to create something original and borderless, I’d love to connect. Reach out through my social channels or email — let’s build something that bridges worlds through sound.
