We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful M Valentina Escobar-Gonzalez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with M Valentina below.
M Valentina , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I grew up in culturally diverse Miami, Florida and moved to the mountains of Northeast Tennessee as a young adult, where very few people looked like me. I understood that I have to make first impressions count because people naturally will judge me first by my appearance and then how I speak. I always made sure to dress up to every event when I was new to the area to the point of overdressing to everything including to doctor appointments. I just finished completing my Masters degree in Business Administration when I moved to the area, so that helped me feel confident in myself. I always try to get to know people with intention and try to be memorable by learning about them even if I was in a crowded room.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities that have been impactful for me is consistency (posting online), being curious (always find me reading a book or learning a new skills), and expressing gratitude. For those of you who are new or starting a chapter, I believe in the power of handwritten notes as way to express appreciation. I usually send them out when someone invites me to be a speaker, podcast guest, or for the holidays as a way to be top of mind. I wouldn’t be where I am without the use of cards and standing out with this old skill.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
I can trace back my professional life before and after reading “Known” by Mark Schaefer, he wrote it 10 years ago and I still remember the case studies, strategies, and frameworks to have you stand out in an online world and how to really focus on your niche. I also recommend the workbook with the name that will help you by asking you deep questions.
