Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jasmine Medel. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jasmine, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from my dad. For a time, he was a single parent, and I watched him work incredibly hard to make sure we always had everything we needed and even the things we wanted. No matter how difficult things got, he never gave up or stopped trying, and seeing his determination taught me the importance of perseverance and strength in the face of challenges.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I started my journey in the beauty world back in high school (2008–2010) when I took a cosmetology course. After getting my license, I tried just about everything in the beauty industry to see where I fit in—but nothing clicked until I became a barber. That’s when I knew I’d found my calling.
My goal with every client is simple: make sure they leave my chair feeling happy, confident, and like the best version of themselves. Versatility is a big part of what I do—I love being able to adapt to different styles, personalities, and vibes. It means a lot to know that people trust me to help them look and feel their best.
Over the years, I’ve realized that being a barber is about more than just cutting hair. A lot of clients open up and share their stories while they’re in my chair, and I see that as a real privilege. I take pride in creating a space where people can talk, laugh, or just take a breather from life for a bit. I’ve been called a “hairapist” more times than I can count—and honestly, I love that.
I’m also proud to provide a safe, welcoming space for everyone, especially members of the LGBTQ+ community. Everyone deserves to feel seen, respected, and celebrated while getting serviced. 🌈✂️

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities that have had the biggest impact on my journey are consistency, knowledge, and open-mindedness. Consistency keeps me grounded and helps me build trust with my clients. Knowledge drives me to keep learning new techniques and trends so I can always deliver my best work. And being open-minded allows me to connect with different people and styles, which keeps my creativity growing and my passion for barbering alive. The best advice I would have for anyone early in their journey is to believe in yourself more than anyone, be your own biggest cheerleader, and stay focused. The only person that can truly make it happen is you! Invest in yourself any which way you can because that’s the best investment to go all in for.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents have ever done for me is that they never gave up on me on my dreams. No matter how difficult I might have been or how wild my ideas sounded, they always stood by me with love and patience. They truly believed in my artistic ability and trusted my determination, even when the path I chose didn’t always make sense to others. Their unwavering support has been the foundation of my strength and the reason I’ve had the courage to chase my dreams. My dad has been my rock my entire life and without him, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.
