Meet Ivan Scott

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ivan Scott. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Ivan, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.

It comes from a belief that my words and stories can resonate with someone, and can make a difference in their life. When I read Hemingway and Fitzgerald, I know that they went through the same rejections, disappointments and doubt as I do, but they pressed on. I believe as long as you don’t quit, no matter how difficult things get, you can succeed.

As authors, we have a responsibility to the world to create stories, characters and feelings that the world will embrace, and also give hope and happiness to the reader.

At the end of the day, the only person you have to be better than is the one in the mirror.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

My road to being a published author is sometimes as crazy as the stories I write.

I have written ever since I was in elementary school and finally was able to publish seven books, all romantic fiction, that look at the romance we have for each other as well as for life.

I have Dyslexia, so that is a struggle at times with writing, but as I tell our two children, whom both have Dyslexia too, “Never use your challenges as an excuse. Use them to achieve greatness.”

My first book was rejected 303 times, but I didn’t take no for an answer and decided to self-publish. It was the best thing I have ever done!

Writing the story, formatting it, creating the cover (I had to learn Photoshop), and doing all the marketing seemed like a daunting task, but I believe that when you have passion and persistence, nothing is impossible.

I live with my beautifully saucy Redheaded wife, two troublemaking kids, and a Rat Terrier named Beesley in the Atlanta suburb of Sandy Springs. My next book is due out in the Spring of 2026.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Passion, persistence and courage.

I believe when you have these qualities, nothing is impossible.

You have to have passion! When you have passion, what you are embarking on does not feel like work. It comes naturally, and as you move forward you feel as if this is what you were meant to do. Your heart will lead you where it wants you to go.

You have to have persistence! I have been rejected hundreds of times. But each time I got off the mat and continued punching since I wouldn’t allow myself to quit. The first time you quit, it’s difficult. The second time, it’s easier. By the third time, you don’t even think about it, you just do it. I never wanted to go down that road so I made up my mind that no matter how difficult things get, I would never give up. I would have to live with myself for the rest of my life regretting what I did. There will be days when you don’t want to get up. You doubt yourself and what you are doing. But it’s okay to lay down and bleed for a while, and then you get back to it when you are ready. Each time you rise, you gain confidence to fight back. The more times you keep fighting back, it becomes who you are and you won’t let yourself quit.

You have to have courage! There have been times when I doubted myself and what I was doing, but if what you want to do in life is in your heart, it won’t let you quit. You will find yourself again, and when you do, you will become victorious. When I feel beaten, I will say to myself, “I am not phenomenally skilled. But I am phenomenally willed. I will not give up. I will not surrender. I will not quit!” And then I get back to it.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

When I was starting college, I was homesick and hated where I Was. I wanted to come home. But they told me to stick it out. And if I came home, I could go to work for my father in the warehouse he was managing. They gave me a choice. And I am grateful they didn’t allow me to quit and come home.

Sometimes, you have to be tougher and more resilient because if you always take the easy way out, you’ll never grow and never succeed in life. Sooner or later, you’ll need to summon up all your skills of strength, and if you haven’t faced the fire and stood up to it at least once in life, you’ll crumble when things get difficult.
