Meet Domeda Duncan Mark Giles

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Domeda Duncan Mark Giles a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Domeda Duncan, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout

Mark and Domeda overcame burnout by taking a well-needed break. OurSundays, which started out as a fun project, grew to become something larger and more demanding of it’s founders. All the while, expectations from members and the community continued to grow (and while that’s a good thing), we needed to slow our pace, pause, reflect and re-engage when we felt refreshed. In reflection, we learned that burnout can sneak up on you so it’s important to be self aware and listen to your body. When you devote so much time and energy to something else, without filling your own cup, it can leave you depleted.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Mark works as a video producer. Domeda works as a senior marketing professional.

As it relates to our role as co-founders of OurSundays, think of us as the brains behind the business. For four years, we’ve built what we hope to become a longstanding organization in Utah. From karaoke in the valley to skiing and snowboarding in the mountains, OurSundays has created opportunities for new and existing residents of Utah. We build community. That’s our business. People feel seen, and celebrated through the work we get to do. It’s hard work, but it’s meaningful and what’s so beautiful about it, is that we’ve met some incredible people along the way.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. Having the ability to connect with people.
2. Understanding marketing.
3. The ability to see a gap and filling the need.

For advice, get clear on your “why” and write it down. You may have to refer back to it. When you stray, and you will, go back to your why.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

Yes — we’re always open to collaboration. We’re especially interested in partnering with organizations, corporations, creatives, and community leaders who share our commitment to culture, connection, and adventure. We welcome partnerships with local businesses, food and beverage brands, outdoor industry brands, artists, and wellness enthusiasts who want to help us create memorable experiences for Utah’s Black community and beyond.
