We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sarah Sohn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Sarah with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I was always a rebel at heart and didn’t like the idea of someone else having control over what I can or can’t do. I believe you have to have your own and that doesn’t always come easily. I work hard to obtain “FU money” to be able to have freedom from any situation if needed. I also saw how hard my parents worked while I was growing up. They came to America looking for a better life and worked various jobs until they eventually met out here and provided for their new family. I can’t take the privilege they gave me for granted. Also being a woman and minority business owner sometime we have to work twice as hard to somewhat prove ourselves to be taken seriously.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the owner of Studio Sohn, where I provide anything lips, lashes and brows. I customize every appointment to my clients needs whether they want something natural or glam. My newest service is Korean lip line extension and lip tint (lip blush) which is a more natural approach to traditional lip blushing. I went to South Korea last year to get my training as I haven’t seen anyone in the States provide such natural results. Its more of a lip contour with the lip extension like how girls over line their lips with lip tint/stains. Since adding that service I am able to provide natural oil and water proof lash extensions, brows and lips making it so much easier to get ready for my efficient girlies out there.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My main quality is relatability. Would you get this service personally? If you don’t believe in it, how do you expect others to want to get it done too. I was always a client first and if I would be a repeat customer I wanted to provide it. I can relate to my clients like “this is how to take care of said service, this is what can happen, and what you should do to prolong whatever service you are getting”. Also when it comes down to policies, the vibe, the location, would I go to a business and be happy with the experience. These are some of the things I tailored into my business.
I also had a background in business before starting as a business major in college. You may have the talent but you need to understand how businesses run as well. It will help you save time and money in the long run especially when it comes to taxes. If you don’t want to major in business, I would look for a mentor or research info on youtube, google, or a professional to fact check.
Lastly is resilience. Being a business owner is not for the weak. Some months (or years) will be better than others. You need to learn how to pivot sometimes, unlearn and re-learn things when you have less appealing months. No one is paying you, you have to keep showing up for yourself and what you worked so hard for.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I am still navigating this as well but what I have found to be helpful is to reach out and talk to someone. Whether it’s just to vent or seek advice, talking about it helps. It is especially helpful having friends or colleagues in the same industry because they will have another level of understanding. Aside from that I like to decompress by working out, going out into nature, taking a vacation, eating my favorite foods, journaling or getting a massage. Also don’t bury it, feel it then grab it by its tail and tell them they don’t know who they are messing with and you are that girl, (for confident research purposes, of course.)
