Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Elin Hunter of Williamsburg Brooklyn

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Elin Hunter. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Elin , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
Many people think Art is easy but one cannot realize the time and commitment it truly takes to be creating authentic Art regularly. You must love doing it for a lifetime and what one must give up for Art still will not guarantee survival or acceptance. To care about ones Art and Self is a must because people will divert, dismiss, destroy and then copy you, whole groups will hate you, then those same people act nice to you when they have use for you. Even natural talent must be developed. Your whole life must be set up to do Art to flow with the energy. Over time pieces get broken, reparations, I am dealing that with now 2 of my sculptural paintings in the 2nd photo of my studio the noses are broken and the 3rd 3D piece the flower heads need to be reattached. Everything must be sturdy, neat for Art presented to the world as an Artist to contend with. People interested in your Art deserve to understand the story and process behind it to trust and invest in your work beyond enjoying it on their wall. The Artist must be sincere, this is why a lifetime of work is necessary because anybody can do a few paintings but a life of making Original Art in a world of immediate gratification is uncommon and carries genuine love beaming out. The distinguished Artist badge is not easy to claim when fame and friendship cliques are the number One commodity in many Art galleries for a flight by night society making top dollar off dead Artists treated like crap. So, for an Artist to be able to bring your Art to the World directly is rewarding and a gift that is not gate blocked as in history in today’s world it swims in a maze of millions of doorways, a flood of self-promoters with time and money spent on pompous bombastic clique bate. Still Artists must fight to keep from drowning in this maze because the Artist is here to stay.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
.I am a painter Fine Art is my brand all else is extra to my painting. Currently I am selling selected paintings and drawings in different versions based on the originals the prints are protected and ready to hang, details on the back of each piece align with my studio authentication and bookkeeping log on each varied release. This Holiday Season 2025 I am bringing out Silkscreen Prints series 1 with a special edition of only 4 customized tapestries framing hand painted silkscreen combinations with airbrush along with a limited series of silkscreen prints ready to hang in matboard frames from the same print run in 2017. The basis of this silkscreen series is two of paintings I rendered specifically for a silk screen print from my Spiritual Hubcap Series Buddha on the Hubcap and The Cosmic Dancer Goddess of Ecstatic Dance Shiva these origina Hubcap paintings are pictured together with this Article. I will be announcing where I am on my websites and social media as I sell in only person as of now. I also draw portraits on the spot and will schedule appointments for a sitting. With my Art display I bring a small case of fashion accessories.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was at age three when I painted a predominately orange painting I felt thrilled about it, and I always remembered that moment like the sun was shining through the painting at me and I thought I was going to be a famous Artist.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I would say that there is always more to the story than even us can know. I had a blood condition all my life and didn’t know it because that was my normal but in my twenties I felt so out of my body all the time I was awake and aware but it did not feel real it was weird and I was painting about the bloodstream and creepy stuff all the time and my blood hurt, little did I know my blood cells were not being made properly and although there were tell-tale signs all the way back to my childhood I was not looking for them. Anyway, a lot of tough things were happening in my life, but the condition was kind of shielding me from feeling the full terror of how I was living, the unpredictability of my future as all I was doing was centered around making Art no guarantee and a lot of risk. It was not until in my 40s that I had an allergic reaction and was in so much agony that I got extensive blood tests done and it was discovered I had a blood condition due to being exposed to war chemicals as a child prior to age two. Being from a Government family who traveled the world this was odd but quite possible although nobody else has this condition in my family, I am the eldest child and who knows. So, I did a lot of research and discovered how to change my life to fight this thing holistically and got my numbers down avoiding medication and as I have gotten older, I feel younger due to my disciplined lifestyle changes. I am grateful and Thank God everyday living healthier than I ever would have if I was not forced to focus on my health as much.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Freedom of Speech is a Coar value that I protect at all costs in the way I conduct my life. Although there is a lot of pressure to go along to get along that is not my scene and the times when I have laid back a little too much during uncomfortable points in my life ultimately direct communication was always the better way for all involved. Being from a traveling upbringing it seems that being the new kid in the school or community I had to tread carefully as they all know each other, and I was the new one with different clothes from the country before. Looking at patterns of action by people and seeing the same things wherever I went, no race, language or culture spoke louder than humanity, showing itself through behaviors and as I got older these patterns became increasingly apparent. With Art you are still speaking and if nobody speaks English, they still understand what you mean. Communication is everything you can hide with words, but the energy still lies beneath the surface, truth will always be the truth so to make the truth illegal is ridiculous and horrific and impossible and people try but we have Laws, and the 1st Amendment helps us in the West a lot!

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes, I have a need to create streak inside myself that pushes me hard to do my best to a point of not being able to stop until I am satisfied with the results everything else can fall to the wayside when I am focused on a creative bender. I found solace in the Buddhist philosophy which suggests that even the way you sweep a room can be done to perfection. Every day I must consider my plans for the day for whatever I start can lead me up that road of perfectionism and if I am not disciplined, I can focus on a task away from what demands most important for my survival. Over the years I have gotten better at this knowing when to switch my focus, stop to sleep, eat and exercise or tend to some other project or job which requires my immediate attention.
