We’re looking forward to introducing you to Bruna Firkins. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Bruna, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Lately, what’s been bringing me the most joy is spending time with my kids and seeing how much they’re growing, not just in age, but in who they’re becoming. Watching their personalities shine and seeing their progress in school, sports, and just life in general makes me so proud.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I’m Bruna Firkins, a family photographer based in the Charleston area. I’m also a proud military spouse and a mom of four, which means I understand the beautiful chaos that comes with family life! My photography business was born from a love of capturing real, joy-filled moments that show genuine connection, the laughter, the cuddles, and all the little in-between moments that tell a family’s story.
What makes my brand special is the heart behind it. For me, photography isn’t just about pretty pictures; it’s about helping families slow down, be present with one another, and walk away feeling even more connected. Having kids of my own has made me extra patient and playful behind the camera, especially with little ones who love to move and explore. I’m currently focused on creating fun, relaxed sessions that reflect each family’s unique energy and love, because those are the memories that last forever.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I believed my world would always stay small. I grew up in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere in Brazil, and I couldn’t see many possibilities beyond what was right in front of me. Looking back now, I could never have imagined the life I have today, living in another country, raising my family, and running my own photography business. It’s taught me that our beginnings don’t define our limits.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self that she is enough, just as she is. That she doesn’t need to fit anyone else’s idea of beauty or success, she can create her own path. There are so many ways to be beautiful, and the kind that matters most always comes from within.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
I’d say the public version of me is mostly the real me. I’m pretty open about my feelings and I love connecting and communicating with people. I don’t usually hide how I feel, but I also try to be respectful of other people’s opinions. At the same time, I think everyone has an inner version of themselves that no one else fully sees, and I do too. We often put on a strong face and show the best parts of ourselves, even when things are messy underneath. I’m learning to give myself more credit and embrace those imperfect parts, too.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
This question really hit me, because I’ve never thought about it before, and it definitely makes me want to reevaluate a few things. If I knew I only had ten years left, I’d stop taking time for granted. I’d focus on being healthier and stronger for my family, complain less, and make sure my priorities truly match what matters most. I’d want to enjoy every single moment to the fullest.
