Story & Lesson Highlights with Milly Baine of North Alabama

Milly Baine shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Milly, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I recently gave birth to my first child, a daughter. She has changed my perspective on photography completely. The way I photograph a wedding has changed a bit. I value the connection between my couple and their parents in such a different light. To know the depth of love a parent has for their child is so enlightening.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Milly, the primary photographer at The Rose Reflective. I specialize in weddings and elopements with an emphasis on creative and documentary-style photography. I highly value inclusivity, especially for the LGBTQIA+ community, in the wedding industry and I incorporate those values into my business and art.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Pregnancy and having my daughter opened my eyes to a completely new perspective on almost everything. Knowing that every person was once someone’s baby has given me deeper empathy and more patience. Knowing how deeply I love my daughter, I see the moments shared by parents and their children on a wedding day so differently and with more reverence.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Holdfast in your convictions, but do not waste your time convincing everyone else of them.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That you must be thin, white, rich, and cis to have a beautiful wedding day.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope they will tell people that I made them feel seen, loved, and celebrated.
