We recently had the chance to connect with Leah Spencer and have shared our conversation below.
Leah, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
More recently I’ve been getting back into freelance photography and videography. It feels good to be back behind the camera and experiment with creativity in a different way!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a full time jewelry artist that mainly works in silver and copper. I source high end gems and minerals for my pieces, ans try to challenge my creativity every time I sit down at the bench to make a piece. While I do jewelry full time, I also work part time at a local metal arts studio, am on the Philadelphia Eagles Drumline, and I dabble in freelance photography & videography. I mainly wire wrap, but I’ve been working more towards high end metal fabrication. Hoping to become practiced enough to expand into the wedding market.
Over the years I honed in on my signature style, and have felt the warmth of my community. Grateful to have gotten to know so many talented artists along my journey.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I wouldn’t say it’s just one moment. But the realizations of knowing you have the power to bring your dreams to waking life. I never thought I would be a jewelry artist. I went to college for something entirely different and ended up meeting creative groups of people along the way that inspired me to take a path less traveled. Once I understood that I could create a life centered around art and creativity, I never looked back.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
This was never a thought in my mind until recent months. The silver market started climbing rapidly, and I watched so many jewelry artists take a step away from creating. There were a few times where it felt impossible to continue. But I do have to say this is why I am so grateful for the love and support from my community, clients, friends, and family. I might not be here still without them.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Besides being truthful and honest, they would probably say passion and drive. I love seeing my friends faces light up when they talk about, or are doing something they are passionate about. And I get the same way! If I ever get on the subject of jewelry and people really want to get deep with me about it, I’ll go on and on. And the excitedness in my face will continue to grow. There’s something about seeing people in their element.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I’d stop worrying about spending money to travel more. I would also stop putting so much pressure on myself when it comes to my progress and life goals when it comes to my jewelry business.
