Carolyn V. Hamilton on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Carolyn V. Hamilton. Check out our conversation below.

Carolyn V., we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
My business is coaching Aspiring Memoir Writers, encouraging people with stories to tell from lessons they’ve learned in their life to write about it in a memoir.

I see so much information on the internet on how to accomplish this, and most of it seems to be making the process of just telling your story more complicated than it needs to be.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a Success Coach for aspiring memoir writers, workshop leader and an Amazon best-selling author with The Memoir to Legacy series of books.

Previously I worked for over three decades as a marketing executive in the real world of Mad Men. In Las Vegas I owned an advertising agency and later a print communications company, Graphic Communications, Inc. In this career I won numerous illustration and design awards plus the Las Vegas Community Achievement Award in Communications and was listed in Who’s Who in the West and Distinguished Women of Southern Nevada.

In 2019 I created the Facebook group, Aspiring Memoir Writers, which now has over 5,300 members.

I’ve personally published 3 memoirs (with 2 more “in the drawer”).

A graduate of Antioch University Seattle, my other adventures have included two years as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in Suriname and a stint—in my “younger days”—as a Playboy Bunny. When not traveling, I reside up in the Andes in Cuenca, Ecuador and in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
For over 30 years I had an amazing relationship with vintage Las Vegas comedian Cork Proctor. It had its ups and downs—chronicled in my second memoir, HELP! I Married a Comedian—and was full of learning experiences that I treasure today. He taught me so much about public speaking and presentation, humor and the business of comedy, the importance of sound and lights, and creativity in every area of living.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Relax and go with the flow. Trust your instincts, learn from your mistakes, and always look forward.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
I believe people want to be acknowledged for a job well done. Yes, we want to earn an income, but we also want to feel good about what we do. A kind word, an “atta-boy”, and a community award are things that answer this need in us.

I believe most people have an immense amount of personal potential that they don’t see in themselves. It often takes someone else, a friend or a mentor, to help them see their possibilities for accomplishment and success.

I believe we are tribal creatures. TEAM – “Together Everyone Achieves More”—applies to every area of our lives. Nothing I’ve achieved has been done by myself alone. Many others have helped and contributed support along the way, for which I am eternally grateful.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
This is an easy question to answer. I believe we all subconsciously want to “give everything our best.” It’s fun to conquer a challenge. It satisfies us in so many subconscious ways. I take personal pride and satisfaction in knowing that whatever I did, I gave it my best.
