Trina Shook on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Trina Shook and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Trina, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
My Calling

I’m being called to help women not only look better on the outside but truly heal their souls. Monumental Med Spa has given me the financial foundation to pursue my passion — helping women transform from the inside out.

Monumental Medical Records came to life during a time of deep frustration as I tried to create my own forms. My COO and I spent countless late nights over nearly three years developing this system. That hard work became more than just technology — it became the financial backbone of what’s next: Monumental Wellness Retreat.

I’m no longer afraid to speak my truth. The Monumental Wellness retreat project was born from that belief — that if we don’t tell our stories, we can’t inspire change. It’s all about speaking our truth, standing in our purpose, and living without fear.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, my name is Trina Shook, and I am a Registered Nurse who moved to Colorado in 2003.

In 2010, I founded Monumental Microderm in Monument, Colorado. The business grew faster than I ever imagined, and before long, I had outgrown my space. In 2013, I relocated to Palmer Lake, where I operated above Bella Panini for nearly ten years.

In September 2023, we took a huge step forward by purchasing our own building and expanding our services under our new name — Monumental Med Spa. Today, we proudly offer a full range of advanced treatments, including:

Microdermabrasion
Chemical peels
Microneedling
IPL & Laser Genesis
Permanent hair reduction
Laser teeth whitening
Full-service waxing
IV hydration therapy
Massage therapy
Wharton’s Jelly (umbilical cord tissue) infusions

In addition to the above medical spa services we have added our balance room. The balance room consists of an infrared sauna, cold plunge and a massage chair that markets itself on releasing stored trauma from your body as well as a salt room that helps to balance energies and is like a toothbrush to your entire respiratory passage. We will break ground soon on our outdoor project, which will include outdoor massage, showers and soaking tubs.

In 2022, I became extremely frustrated trying to create my own Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system. I reached out to my COO, and together, we spent countless hours developing what would become Monumental Medical Records. After using it in our practice for about a year, my medical director was blown away by how effective and user-friendly it was — and strongly encouraged us to share it with others.

Today, our EMR is being used by six other medical aesthetics practices, offering a customizable, HIPAA-compliant platform that simplifies documentation and enhances efficiency.

Most recently, in 2023, we received approval for our nonprofit organization — Monumental Wellness Retreat — a vision designed to help women heal not only on the outside but within their souls.

Monumental Med Spa has given me the ability to pursue my true passion: helping women transform inside and out, through beauty, wellness, and truth.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?

What Taught Me Most About Work

That’s pretty easy. Early in my career as an Emergency Room Nurse, I learned so much about the complexities of people’s trauma — not just physical, but emotional and spiritual as well. I witnessed firsthand the resilience of the human spirit and discovered the many ways we can help others overcome obstacles and move forward into healthier, more peaceful lives.

Those experiences shaped everything I’ve done since. The lessons I learned in nursing became the foundation for Monumental Med Spa, Monumental Medical Records, and Monumental Wellness Retreat — all built on the same belief: that true healing happens when we care for the whole person — body, mind, and soul.

Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
The Power of Being Heard

The moment that stands out most vividly for me is with my dear friend Ronda, who is now also my company’s COO. Years ago, we supported each other through our divorces — two women navigating pain, growth, and transformation. During my most difficult moments, Ronda didn’t just listen; she helped me take action. She gave me the courage and clarity to move forward, leave a toxic marriage, and start truly living again.

Through that shared experience, our friendship deepened into something extraordinary — a partnership built on trust, compassion, and shared purpose. It was a natural next step for Ronda to join me at Monumental Med Spa and later help co-found Monumental Medical Records.

That bond has become the foundation of so much of our success. Today, we’re thriving as friends, survivors, and business partners, growing not only the spa and EMR business but also our nonprofit — Monumental Wellness Retreat — which gives back to women who have walked paths similar to ours.

I’m endlessly grateful for Ronda. She’s not only a part of my business; she’s part of my heart. I can’t wait to see where this journey takes us next, because I know one thing for sure — together is better.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?

The Biggest Lie in Our Industry

One of the biggest lies our industry tells itself is that great client service and efficient operations can’t thrive without the right technology. In reality, too many medical practices are forced to choose between caring for their clients and managing outdated, inefficient systems that don’t meet their needs.

That’s exactly why my COO, Ronda and I created Monumental Medical Records. We were excellent at providing high-quality service, but the technology available simply didn’t support the level of excellence we demanded. We knew there had to be a better way — so we built it.

Our goal was simple: to combine exceptional client care with streamlined, user-friendly technology. And the response has been incredible. Practices throughout Colorado are now using Monumental Medical Records, confirming what we already knew — we weren’t the only ones struggling with inefficient tools.

We’re proud to have created a solution that empowers medical teams to deliver outstanding care and operate seamlessly behind the scenes. Because in our view, great medicine deserves great technology.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
Finding Peace Through Travel

There are many ways I find peace, but at the top of the list is travel—especially exploring Europe and experiencing cultures that aren’t as well known here in the United States.

Recently, my COO, Rhonda, and I spent several weeks in Slovenia, where we met incredible new friends, enjoyed unique cuisine, and immersed ourselves in the country’s rich history and culture. The trip was both grounding and inspiring.

When we returned home to Colorado and back to Monumental Med Spa, Monumental Medical Records, and Monumental Wellness Retreat, we felt completely refreshed—ready to serve our clients with renewed passion and the energy they deserve.
