Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Luci Petlack of Sacramento, CA

We recently had the chance to connect with Luci Petlack and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Luci, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
That it’s too much. Whether it’s with their work, their family, their health, their happiness, their money, etc. It’s all so much and we’re all so scared to say it out loud. We all think everyone else is handling and we should be handling it all, but it really is too much and we all have to learn (sometimes again and again) that it’s really all more than one of us can handle. Learn to say no. Understand YOUR boundaries. And take help when you can. Yes, maybe you can do it all, but at what cost?

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Luci Petlack and I’m the real life blogger behind Luci’s Morsels – a site and brand about doable sustainability in almost all walks of everyday life. What started as a hobby baking business in grad school in 2012 is now a recognized brand. We all know about sustainability and are generally interested in it, but it always seems difficult and maybe just icing on the cake. I share reasonable ideas without any judgement to take what works for you to live more mindfully and leave what doesn’t.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My parents. They owned a small business and were frequently (not always) talking about work. They enjoyed it. They enjoyed talking to one another and they were always open to talking with me about it. I’ve always felt one’s job should be enjoyable (to make it through the hard parts) and not something you look forward to leaving. It really doesn’t feel like (as much) work when you love what you do!

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Not living up to my full potential. We got deep here; this is my greatest fear. I always thought I could do anything I set my mind to (I still kind of think that), but I constantly judge myself for not being more successful (in its many ways). Sometimes I just have to settle with those thoughts. Other times I need to talk to friends and family who understand business ownership and the highs and lows. And sometimes, if I’ve had enough sleep, I power-work through it until my mind gets over it.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Hah. Yeah. I think people assume it isn’t, but I don’t try to hide who I am. My sarcastic, quick-wit doesn’t often come through on my blog and social media because it’s written (without intonation and timing). That’s the one thing that’s hidden, but it certainly isn’t intentional!!

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
My weekly newsletter. That sounds silly maybe, but I’ve built strong relationships with my followers in my weekly newsletters. They’re usually a story – a glimpse into my everyday life in a relatable way. Sometimes they’re meant to be uplifting; sometimes they’re just funny; and sometimes it’s more of a “I see you and feel the feels you’re feeling too.” And then there’s the latest sustainable living blog posts and current sustainable producing I’m using and eyeing.
