An Inspired Chat with Kalika Evans of Las Vegas, Nevada

Kalika Evans shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Kalika, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: When have you felt most loved—and did you believe you deserved it?
Oh this is a really deep question, honestly everyday with my husband. I always feel like I didn’t deserve to be this spoiled and well taken care of. He supports my creative journey and is always willing to help fund or fix things when I need them. Not to mention when I’m dealing with illness he’s the first one to make sure I get better. I don’t think I believe it most days, its something I struggle with, but I’m learning to accept it.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m MidnightPursona, I’m a content creator and cosplayer, I try to provide a comfy cozy platform where people can relax from the world and smile. I really love to make people smile and feel better about themselves through my streaming, artwork, and other content!

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I use to believe my singing and voice aren’t anything special. My father use to tell me that “every black girl can sing” so I never really pursued singing. Its one of my favorite hobbies and I’m always wondering around my house belting KPop Demon Hunter. I’ve been told many times that I’m a good singer and people would love to hear me make music, but I just didn’t think I was good enough. Now, I’ve been trying to get over it and start to record covers!

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
When I realized, as a black, fat, disabled, queer woman, it doesn’t matter how hard you work and what you do, people will always find something wrong with it. If you speak soft, you’re mean. If you speak loud, your aggressive. If you do it yourself, your controlling. If you ask for help, you’re needy. After realizing that’s how the world saw us, I just started doing whatever I wanted. I started to reach for my dreams and working on the things I love, because I would be judged either way- May as well do something that makes me happy.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
I’d like to believe so, other then when I’m exhausted. I don’t have the energy to mask as much as I use too, so I try to just show people who I am from the start. I don’t lie, I have times where I shut down and begin to mask when I feel unsafe. However, for the most part, I’m very open with my audience and friends.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What false labels are you still carrying?
Unworthiness, Imposter, Talentless, etc. I suffer from imposter syndrome often. Even when I have proof and can see how hard I work for things, I always feel like its not enough. That I need to work much harder for what I’m getting. At the same time, I struggle with feeling like I’m not getting enough for what work I put out. Its a very difficult and exhausting battle.
