Story & Lesson Highlights with Ines Segarra

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Ines Segarra . Check out our conversation below.

Hi Ines, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Have you stood up for someone when it cost you something?
Absolutely, I stood for a coworker that was being bullied. I work at a medical office, full of women and women can be vicious. We were group chatting and she was getting nasty messages from a senior employee and I stood up for her and almost lost my job over it. I was not going to apologize for standing up to a bully. I don’t care who you are, don’t do that bullying shit around me. I would do it again, too. I can’t stand bullies, whether it’s reality or online, I see so much bullying online and that’s another subject that doesn’t get spoken about a lot. Trolling is trashy and people who do it are miserable with their lives. I find bullies to be absolutely disgusting people. I hate to say it, but some people don’t grow up much after high school.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Izzy Smut and I’m a podcast host for Never Mind The Broadcast, Here’s Izzy Smut. I play underground punk bands and only underground punk shows in my show. I love starting off with interesting facts before an episode because we all should learn something. I want to build a small punk community and help bands out by shouting them out. Punk scene is what you make of it. Even though my show is small, I like it that way. I want my people, listeners and bands that I play to be part of my tribe.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I will say your attitude. If you have a shitty attitude, that spreads around like wildfire. I hate to say it, but being in bands and being part of the scene is a people business. If you think you’re better than everyone else, people won’t take you seriously. You have to be careful about choosing band mates because those people are representing your band. If you choose people that love to start shit with others, that’s a wrap for your band. I’ve seen many bands fail for one person being an asshole. It never fails.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely! When I played in bands, I thought no one cared. I got in my head and thought that I’ll never be anything special, because of how I looked. I don’t look punk enough or sexy enough. I’ve seen how people reacted towards other women in the scene who were those things and that wasn’t me. I’m not bashing them, for being who they are, but I wanted my music to be heard. I felt like I wasn’t being taken seriously because of how I looked. It’s shitty, how looks are the upmost importance but not the music itself.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
What you hear and see if what you get. I’m not trying to be anything other than me. I am silly, weird but I can also be real and serious as well. I don’t give a shit if I go viral or not. I use to care before, but I’m doing this show my way. I don’t want anyone to change it or make it into something it’s not.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m at home, playing music and writing songs. I haven’t released anything lately because I’ve been blocked. I hate writing lyrics but I’m also stuck. I have songs that all I need are vocals but I also hate my voice haha it’s crazy, to be in my head about my music but I want to be proud of my songs. I don’t want to copy what I’ve done before.
