Bill McKay of Arvada on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Bill McKay shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Bill, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I would say my sobriety- I’m coming up on 14 years alcohol and drug free. The peaceful home I’ve created, for myself and my kids, which allows for a peaceful thought process, is something I’m proud of.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a musician, and have been my entire life. I’m a singer/ songwriter, piano, organ, keyboard player. I believe I’ve developed an interesting career, because I play many different styles of music and am part of many different projects. I play solo piano shows that feature blues, jazz, Great American Songbook music, ballads, and the like. I also play in multiple bands that rock- funk, soul, bluegrass, and tribute music of some classic rock bands. I write all sorts of styles of music, and pride myself as a versatile singer as well.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was an explorer. I was full of imagination about fantasy worlds, space ships, wizards and dragons. I believed that our minds and imagination can take us anywhere, and that good triumphs over evil.

When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
Music. It’s always been music. And books- reading, writing, and art.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
This is a hard one to admit, but that hard work and dedication always leads to success and happiness. I’ve worked very hard my entire life, and still have constant financial struggles and deep questions about ever being truly happy. I know that this is true for so many hard working musicians, and it can make us question that concept.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
Singing and playing music.
