We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jonah Dillon. Check out our conversation below.
Jonah, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: When was the last time you felt true joy?
The last time I felt true Joy was at an art show I had about a month ago. I organized this event along with another artist/Friend Bode. Seeing this event come together brought me lots of joy but the moment where I felt the most joyful was when I was live painting in front of a crowd of people.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi my name is Jonah Dillon a.k.a. Tread lightly.
I am a 29-year-old artist living in Austin Texas.
I create unique abstract artwork utilizing the wheels of my wheelchair. I started creating art this way because due to the progression of my condition muscular dystrophy, which made it so I was no longer able to draw with my hands.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
When I was a child I always believed that I wanted to create video games when i grew up. But during high school I realized that I didn’t really want to pursue that anymore after taking a few animation classes. I realize that grading video games was a lot more technical and not as artistic as I would like it to be.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I would say when I really stopped hiding my pain was somewhat recent like within last the last five years. What really helped with using it as power was when I started creating utilizing my wheelchair. Another way I started sharing my pain and using it as power is I started writing poetry some of which I would like to turn into music eventually.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
Who do I admire for their character, I would have to go with my friend and fellow artist Bode Robinson. The reason I say this is she has the most positive Energy I have ever felt from anyone. She is amazingly helpful and never seems upset and it’s very good at handling problems. Last but not least she creates amazing artwork that is very bright and colorful and usually has a positive message.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I feel like I am doing what I was born to do. However, I don’t always feel that way sometimes I question if creating artwork is really what I want to do with my life or should be doing. But I feel like if you’re not question what you are doing then maybe that is not the thing you should be doing.
