Story & Lesson Highlights with Mrs. Tawanna Houston of Houston Texas

Mrs. Tawanna Houston shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Tawanna, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day?! (Laughs) the closest to a normal day for me always starts with gratitude. I do my best to remember to thank God before I even get out of bed, because that sets the tone for the day. I make my bed as one of my first accomplishments too. It’s a small thing, but it makes me feel like I’ve already won something before I even leave the room.

After that, I check on my family and help get their day started with motivation, then I invest in my own self-care so I can show up fully in everything I do. Somewhere in there, I’ll practice a few model poses (sometimes in the mirror, sometimes just while walking through the house) because hey, you never know when that camera might pop out. (laughs)

From there, my days are a mix of business and creativity from handling Avon orders, recording music, or teaching at John Casablancas. No two days ever look the same, and honestly, I love my life that way. It keeps me on my toes, it keeps me growing, and there’s always a reason to laugh along the way.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Tawanna Houston. I sing, I write, I act, I model, and I even run my own Avon business on the side and so much more. So basically, I don’t believe in getting bored. (laughs)

What makes me unique is I’ve learned how to wear all these hats without losing who I am. One minute I might be teaching students about the entertainment industry, the next I’m dropping an R&B/Trap-Soul track, and then I’m at home making sure my family is good. My life is like a mix of hustle and heart, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Right now, I’m focused on building my music catalog and connecting with audiences worldwide! But always in a way that feels authentic. Because at the end of the day, I love my life, I love what I do, and I want people to see that if I can juggle all this and still laugh through it, they can too! Being Mrs. Houston isn’t just a name…it’s a whole lifestyle.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I thought the life I dreamed of would only stay a dream. Honestly, I believed my prayers might go unanswered, and that maybe I wasn’t qualified to become the woman I wanted to be. A lot of that came from decisions I made early on and the environment I grew up in; it shaped how I saw myself.

But over time, I learned those doubts weren’t the truth. God never ignored my prayers…He was just preparing me. Every experience, even the hard ones, ended up giving me lessons, strength, and perspective I needed to step into who I am today.

Now I look back and laugh at that little girl who thought she wasn’t enough. I tell her, ‘Look at us now.’ The dream didn’t stay a dream …I’m wide awake, building it brick by brick.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutelyyyyy! (laughs) This question actually brings me joy to answer because it’s so real. I can’t lie…there were plenty of moments where I was like, ‘yep, I’m done, this is too much.’ But life has this funny way of clapping back like, ‘nah, not yet.’ Every single time I was about to tap out, something divine would show up out of nowhere (a sign, a blessing, that whisper from God) and it reminds me, ‘this is the way, keep going.’

And honestly, when I look at the results I’ve been able to produce, the doors that opened, the opportunities that lined up? That’s nothing but God. Because on paper, it didn’t add up. I wasn’t supposed to be here if you looked at my past decisions or my environment. But God had other plans.

Now sure, it stings when some the closest people outside my household that I thought would be the first to support me don’t support or even try to fully understand why I push the way I do. But that silence doesn’t cancel out my calling. If anything, it fuels me!

So yeah, I almost gave up more times than I can count… but those divine interruptions? They kept me laughing through the pain, kept me moving forward, and reminded me I was built for this. And if I had quit back then, I wouldn’t be here giving you this interview. That right there is proof that the results you see from me…That’s God, not luck!

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, the public version of me is the real me. What you see is what you get. I don’t put on a mask for the world, because honestly, that would be too exhausting (laughs).

Now, the public might see the polished side…the music, the modeling, the confidence, but behind that is a woman who thanks God before getting out of bed, who invests in her family and self-care, and who’s learned plenty from her mistakes along the way. I’ve had moments where bad decisions or financial struggles could’ve defined me, but instead, they refined me.

Those lessons (whether it was about money, boundaries, or self-belief) are what shaped the version of me people see today. So when I step out in public, it’s not a performance. It’s me, just with the volume turned up: the same faith, the same drive, the same resilience.

So yeah, it’s all me! Just with a mic in one hand, a dream in the other, and a whole lot of lessons fueling me forward (smiles).

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I think people will most misunderstand my legacy by looking at the surface and underestimating it. I’m not who I appear to be and that’s the beauty of it. It’s almost like when Jesus rolled into town on a donkey (Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t think I’m Jesus but I am guided by Him and His testimony.) People often expect greatness to show up in glitter and gold, but sometimes it comes looking a little more humble, a little more unexpected.

On the outside, folks might see the struggles, the labels, or just everyday life and think they know me. But what they miss is the faith, the grind, and the results that can only be explained by God’s hand on my life. My legacy isn’t about the packaging, it’s about the purpose. And hey! if I can surprise a few people along the way, then I guess that’s part of the plan too. (Laughs)
