Preslee Marshall of Winnipeg on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Preslee Marshall shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Preslee, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
One of the first things I do when I wake up is check my emails. I feel like there is always something important hiding in my inbox. Rather this is a client inquiry, an appointment reminder or a bank statement. I like to get it addressed first thing in the morning so I don’t forget or miss anything.

And then the rest of my day will stem from there. Do I have any payments needing to be made today? Do I have an appointment I need to get ready for? Or maybe I just have work to do, in which case a shower is a good start to my day lol.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Preslee Marshall, and I reside in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

I learned about hard work from a young age. Before turning 16, I sometimes worked as an extra in movies which would usually span over a few days, at 10-ish hours a day. I also loved having garage sales and lemonade stands. I made a point to save up any cash made in all instances.

I was always comfortable with the idea of working a standard 9-5. While many saw and see it as something to not be proud of, I loved finding security in guaranteed pay and benefits/pension.

When I first started my business, it was actually due to a company I was working for moving out of the Country and turning me into a contractor. I had the opportunity at this time to open up my own business, and to be contracted through that which came with amazing benefits of its own. But even with that, I worked a regular job on the side, and still do. Stable money is just a nice feeling. When owning your own business, it isn’t always as stable.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
I would have to say successful strangers on the internet and TV.

I lived during a time when the internet really exploded. I had easy access to watching everyday people start from the bottom and work their way up.

I think just knowing that it was possible, made me excited to work toward a successful and happy future of my own. While friends of mine were watching cartoons, I would binge watch home renovation and house flipping shows. Knowing there were so many endless possiblities in the world really made me excited for my future.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You may have missed out on some hangout sessions with friends (though, looking back at the influences I used to hang around with, this was probably for the best), but you worked so hard to build yourself up financially from a young age, and it was absolutely worth it.

You will be a true testimate to where hard work and dedication can and will get you. A few setbacks are totally normal, as this is how we will learn and grow into who we always dreamt of being.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Honesty. I always tell my friends that I will be honest with them, even if it means they will be mad at me. In the end, I want the people I am close with to succeed in life and be the best them they could be, and sometimes that means being straight forward and not enabling bad choices or behaviours. I would hope the people in my life would do the same for me. How else are we supposed to grow as people?

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Working and investing.

I am and have been working numerous jobs at a time since I was 19 to build a successful future. Looking back now, to almost 10 years ago… I wasn’t always enjoying myself, and I wish I had a bit more free time to see friends. But now I understand why I did what I did. I wanted to secure a financially stable future for myself, and that came with sacrifice.

Now struggling with some medical conditions, I am super happy I started to build my future when I was so young and during a time when my body was better equipped to handle so much work. I am hoping that in another 10 years, I can look back again and be proud of the choices I’ve made in all aspects of my life.

And of course, being my age, my investments are set aside for the long term. Comparing where my investments were when I started at 18 to now is amazing. And today, I am still investing, and with some of them, I won’t see a noticeable return any time soon. But I am looking forward to retirement one day
