Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Mrs. Sonia Sleeger of Claremont, CA

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Mrs. Sonia Sleeger. Check out our conversation below.

Sonia, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
I’ve learned that customers have many different likes, dislikes and opinions. Which is great!!! I love to hear the good, bad and those that seem confused about what I am creating. I think it’s very humbling and gratifying at the same time. I think when first began creating I was really sensitive about what people would say about my artwork. But it has helped me grow as an Artist.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sonia Sleeger, a multi-disciplinary artist from Southern California who creates for myself. I create what I like, not necessarily what people think I should create.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I guess it would be that I believed my words didn’t matter. I grew up in a home where my pop worked from midnight to 9 am. He would stay up til noon then sleep until 6 pm. I couldn’t make any noise in the house, I couldn’t have friends over because we had to keep it down. I would get razzed by my friends because they couldn’t come over. It was difficult. I think I lost my voice. I was always so very quiet in class, even when the teacher would call on me I would freeze. I am no longer that child:)
I found my voice after I graduated high school and never looked back. My voice is expressed every day in the art I create.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me that I have an abundance of strength and fortitude! Sometimes, I reflect on my life now that I am about to turn 60. I know that with every trial, my strong belief in my faith and God has helped me through and through.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, the public version of myself is true x10! No fakeness here! I am proud that I still maintain elementary and high school friendships. I have never wanted to hide behind a facade personality. What you see is what you get. I love who I am!

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people come up with stories of kindness, lots of laughter, my love for dancing and creativity. An empathetic human being who found her love of creating art at the age of 52 with no signs of stopping.
