Story & Lesson Highlights with Holly Owen of Bywater, New Orleans

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Holly Owen. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Holly, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
I’m not currently chasing anything; I’ve been there, done that and have the scars to show for it. I no longer force, I let things flow.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I’m Holly, an interior designer, photographer, and writer. I published a coffee table book in 2022, https://a.co/d/cjzdFta, “Quit Playing Yourself,” and am working on another concept with a similar layout but different theme.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
I used to think I had to earn rest, and that my worth stemmed from my productivity. None of that is true, which really became clear to me after breaking my ankle.

I still have goals and things I would like to do, but I plan to work on them at a more intuitive – and less frantic – pace.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
My realtionship struggles, as addressed in my book, have been something I have had to learn and heal from time and again. A lot of the issues we have as adults in our relationships, and with ourselves, stem from childhood trauma. Healing is not linear.

Right now, I’m healing from a bad ankle break. I twisted it in August whilst preventing myself from falling down a steep set of stairs, and wound up with a gnarly trimall fracture.

This has literally slowed me down in ways I didn’t know I needed. It hasn’t been easy, but I’ve gained a fresh perspective on my life, what’s truly important, and how I want to live it moving forward.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. Authenticity is very important to me. I speak and behave the same way no matter who I’m talking to. (Though I might try to tone down the swearing, lol.)

The world needs to see more unique people who are true to themselves, not fake, curated unattainable lifestyles. Perfection is a myth. And it’s boring.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
That the world is full of magic if you dare to pay attention. Those signs you’re seeing, that song you heard just when you needed it, that message on the billboard – they’re for you.

You’re not imagining it. There are no coincidences. Open your heart and mind to the beauty and wonder of the world, and your life will bloom in ways you never thought possible.
